Nokturnus is a character and recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series that appears as a bonus superboss in Dragon Quest VI, serving as the game's most powerful opponent.
Outside of VI, with few exceptions, he is the strongest monster in every game he appears in. Nokturnus also appears in Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies as the strongest legacy boss, obtained from the final quest (#184); and in Dragon Quest X as a superboss in two occasions: the first one alone and the second one in a tag-team along with the King of Calamity.
Characteristics
Nokturnus resembles a tall, well-built human male. He resembles Dhuran, but his skintone is a shade of brown, instead of orange or red.
Another difference with Dhuran is the armor; Nokturnus' armor is more complex and has more details in comparison. The color of the armor's plates is green (this green in particular resembles the color of copper when it gets oxidized). Furthermore, the armor also has some little crimson details that look like blood veins. In X and Heroes, these blood veins start emitting a malevolent red light when Nokturnus gets enraged or he is about to use a powerful attack. Nokturnus wears a pair of green boots that extend just below his knees, these boots are black on the inside and have flat soles. His attire is completed with a cape. This cape is black or dark grey on the outside and scarlet on the inside, therefore differing from the one that Dhuran wears since that one is indigo on both the outside and the inside.
Nokturnus is equipped with a double-bladed weapon. In most of its appearances, this weapon has a dark purple handgrip and the blades are irregular, giving the impression that, like Nokturnus' armor, it is made of oxidized copper; however in its Dragon Quest Heroes appearance, the blades are bigger and sharper and now violet with some golden demonic decorations.

Strategy
The player can either level-build to the 70s and use a standard strategy, or try their hand against him at high 40s.
It is heavily advised to have several characters in the Hero vocation, with two MP-heavy characters as Sages (equip the Duplic Hat on one.). The caster focusing on Omniheal user should have a Meteorite Bracer equipped at all times. Keep Buffs to a minimum to avoid Nokturnus' negation; he appears to use Disruptive Wave more often when more than one character has Oomph up, or several supportive buffs are in place. To prevent buffs from getting nulled, have one Oomph and one Kabuff put in place. Otherwise, reapply support spells after each Disruptive Wave.
Heroes should attack by using Gigaslash every round. A Hero with [Oomph]] active should use Focus Strength and Knuckle Sandwich. The Sages should unleash Magic Burst as soon as possible. Once both Sages drop their attacks, switch one of them for another Hero, who will be a dedicated Hustle Dancer to keep health up. If a Hero should run out of MP using Gigaslash, the Hustle Dancer will exchange roles with him/her. Swap in your healer at any moment should more healing power be necessary.
Alternatively, one party member can master the Liquid Metal Slime and Paladin classes. That one member will act as the party's shield by using the Paladin's Forbearance skill, with one Buff always active to reduce the damage caused by Nokturnus. Liquid Metal Slime vocation mastery yields high defence and immunity to all elements, proving as a very useful tank for the party. The other members should use the same attack strategies as above. Keep in mind Nokturnus has abilities that can slip by Forbearance, so an occasional Hustle Dance should be done to keep the party safe. Again, an Omniheal user is always a good idea in case the tank begins to falter. Reapply Buff on the party defender if Nokturnus negates it.
If you defeat Nokturnus, there is a chance that he will drop a Liquid Metal Mind. If he is defeated in less than 20 turns, you will be treated to a special scene.

Trivia
- Nokturnus was supposed to be the last boss of Dragon Warrior Monsters, but was cut from the game.
- Although Nokturnus shares his sprite with Dhuran in the original SFC version of VI, he has a different sprite in the DS version.
- Nokturnus is the only Legacy Boss in Dragon Quest IX to drop more than one color orb, and is the only monster in the Defeated Monster List that can be fought multiple times to have only one item drop listed. This is because, like all other Legacy Bosses, he always drops a Mini medal upon defeat, but the orb he drops varies with his level, and the costume items are not listed for any of the Legacy Bosses.
