The Ragin' Contagion is a character and boss in Dragon Quest IX. It is a gaseous, pestilential monster that was sealed long ago inside the Quarantomb by the people of Coffinwell to keep it from infecting anyone else.

Characteristics

Ragin' Contagion is a monster with a pink gaseous body that has three red eyes, a long green tongue that appears to constantly emit poisonous breath, and a set of claws that trail along the ground. Its tongue makes it appears as though it is drooling onto the ground. Its Japanese name is a combination of the words "pandemic", a type of disease that affects people over a wide geographic area, and "Pandemonium", a term coined by English poet John Milton which roughly means "all demons". In the English version of the game, it speaks with a stereotypical Southern accent.

Story

The Contagion was sealed in a jar in the centre of the Quarantomb years before the events of the game. However during the earthquake at the beginning of the game, the jar was broken and the Contagion was able to cause illness in Coffinwell once again. The player manages to defeat the Contagion and return Coffinwell to normal. The Contagion infects people whenever it is nearby. This manifests itself as a cough, a high temperature and eventually death. There is no known cure to this, but it will quickly subside when the Contagion is sealed. In Coffinwell, only one person dies from the Contagion, although it is noted that if it had continued much longer many more would have.
