"I am no longer Jack of Alltrades! I am become Master of Nu'Un, and all will learn to obey me...or suffer my wrath!"
The Master of Nu'un is a boss in Dragon Quest IX.
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
The Master of Nu'un is a bipedal monster with a muscular humanoid form whose body is mainly orange in colour, with segmented grey armour protecting his head, shoulders, arms, legs, and covering his long tail, which ends in a stinger-like tail. Green lines border the parts of his body covered by the armoured plates. He has three red eyes, two wide horns on his head, and sharp spikes on his forearms, thighs, and jutting out from his knuckles. The only parts that remain of Abbot Jack's original appearance are his white beard, his mitre, and the collar from his robe, which now hands from his chest. After he is defeated in battle, he returns to his original form. His name is a play on the phrase "jack-of-all-trades, master of none".
Story[edit | edit source]
At the top of the Tower of Trades, the Hero witnesses Abbot Jack calling out to the heavens for the power of ultimate guidance. However, he becomes consumed by a dark power and takes on a monstrous appearance. The abbot temporarily experiences lucidity when he realises the dark power isn't what he wished for, but his personality then takes a sudden shift and he declares he will use the power to rule over humanity. He takes notice of the Hero and challenges them to a battle. After he is defeated, the abbot changes back into a human, but he has no memory of turning into a monster. He states that he took a bite of a Fygg and began to lose his sense of self. The abbot then heads back to the Abbey to return to his duties, leaving behind the shining fruit. Back at the abbey, the Hero and the party gain the ability to change their vocations.
