The dark star is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series, first appearing in Dragon Quest VIII. It is a sinister celestial body originating from the World of Darkness displaying an unnerving smile.

Characteristics

Dark stars are a large, spherical monsters that resemble an anthropomorphic sun or star. Like all monsters from the World of Darkness, its coloration consists of various shades of black and grey. It has a perpetually grinning face, along with a squat nose and beady eyes, and the back of its body is covered with sharp spikes, meant to evoke the image of a star's corona. The dark star has a smaller satellite with a grinning face orbiting its body that looks like a comet with a long, trailing tail. It attacks by swallowing its satellite and spitting it at enemies, after which it returns to the dark star. It possesses various abilities for debilitating its enemies, such as blinding them by casting Dazzle, paralyzing them with its burning breath, and making them more vulnerable to magic by emitting an eerie light. According to the dark star's bestiary entry in Dragon Quest X, they have bad blood with the blue moons.

Like all monsters from the World of Darkness, it begins appearing in various parts of the world after the fall of Black Citadel. Unlike the other monsters, the dark star encountered in the World of Light has become stronger, notably gaining a high resistance to damage but losing its resistance to ice breath. Oddly enough, it drops less gold than its World of Darkness counterpart.

Reappearing from Version 6.2 onwards, they fight the same way as in VIII, but have traded in their ability to use Spooky Aura for Dark Breath.

Etymology

In astronomy, a dark star is a theoretical type of star that may have existed early in the universe before conventional stars were able to form and thrive. It is believed to be powered by the self-annihilation of dark matter particles. Dark stars may also refer to another theoretical celestial object that is so massive that its gravitational pull is equal to that or exceeds to speed of light, making it appear dark as no light can escape. This makes it equivalent to a black hole.

• The dark star's original name in Japanese, Spin Satan (スピンサタン), can have a double meaning as it can refer to both the planet Saturn and Satan, also known as the devil in Christianity. The dark star's bestiary description in X states that it smiles eerily like a demon.
