Cruel Claw is a skill in the series.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

A skill where the user takes a bite out of a character with their razor-sharp fangs, dealing a high amount of damage that can only reduced by defending. In some games, it ignores the target's Defence.

Appearances[edit | edit source]

Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake[edit | edit source]

Cruel Claw is an enemy-only skill used by the Dragonlord's second form. It inflicts around 160 damage to the Hero and ignores his Defence. On the Dragonlord's third turn, he will use it twice in a row. When used, the in-game text states that "the Dragonlord tries to take a bite out of <Hero> with his enormous fangs!".

Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake[edit | edit source]

Cruel Claw is an enemy-only skill used by the Dragonlord's great, great grandson, as well as Xenlon. It also inflicts around 160 damage to a single character and ignores their Defence.

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation[edit | edit source]

In remake versions of the game, it is an enemy-only skill used by Xenlon, along with the Grand Dragon in the GBC version. In all versions except for the GBC version, it is an attack that deals 160~180 damage to a single character. It is a non-elemental fixed damage attack and the damage can only be reduced by defending. In the smartphone and Nintendo Switch versions, the in-game text states that "Xenlon tries to take a bite out of <character> with its enormous fangs!".

  • In the GBC version, it is an attack that simply deals 150% of the user's normal attack damage. The damage can be reduced by the target's DEF, which is unique to this version. When used, the in-game text states that the user "chewed on <character>!".

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake[edit | edit source]

Cruel Claw returns to being a non-elemental, fixed damage attack like the Super Famicom version, once again dealing around 160~180 damage to a single character. It is used again by both Xenlon and the Grand Dragon, as well as Pandora's box. In a change from the previous remake versions, Cruel Claw's damage can also be reflected back at the user if the target is wearing Spiked armour. It can also be used by a friendly Mimic, Infernal serpent, Green dragon, or Xenlon in the Monster Arena.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • In the HD-2D Remake games, the skill shares a name with the recurring Cruel claw material. However, in all the games it appears, the skill involves the user biting with their fangs, rather than their claws. The skill's name can only be seen in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake by speaking to Monty at any Monster Arena and viewing the status of a friendly monster that can use it.
