Kacrack is a spell in the Dragon Quest series. It pierces all enemies with ice damage.
Localization history[edit | edit source]
The spell named マヒャド Mahyado in Japanese used to be called Kacrackle. Since then, with the arrival of a next tier Crack spell - マヒャドデス Mahyadodesu -, the name Kacrackle was used for that spell instead, while this one was renamed Kacrack.
Additionally, mostly on numbered games until Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen, there was the spell ヒャダイン Hyadain that was also named Kacrack. For uses of that specific spell, see Kacrack (Hyadain)
Appearances[edit | edit source]
Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation[edit | edit source]
Kacrackle is learned by Mages and Sages at level 26 in the original version due to a programming bug, and at level 32 in all subsequent remakes. Deals between 88~112 points of damage and costs 12 MP to cast, paralleling Kasizzle. In the NES version of Dragon Warrior III, it is called Snowstorm, while in the Game Boy version it is called Blizzard.
The enemies Leger-de-Man, franticore, manticore, WhiteLion, and Zoma can use this spell to deal 55~67 damage to the party.
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake[edit | edit source]
Kacrackle is learned by Mages and Sages at level 34 if their wisdom exceeds 158 points. Kacrackle costs 14 MP and deals up to 119~161 damage to all enemies. As with all multi-targeting attack spells Kacrackle's power is increased if it is used against a smaller number of foes, being 130% damage against a single monster, 120% against two monsters, and 110% damage when used on three monsters.
When cast by monsters Kacrackle will deal 88~116 damage to the party.
Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen[edit | edit source]
Kacrackle damages a group of foes for 88~112 damage, and costs 11 MP to cast. It is learned by Borya at level 32. The 9th Chosen One starts out with this spell upon joining. In the NES version of Dragon Warrior IV, it is called Blizzard; instead, the name Snowstorm was given to Crackle.
The enemies freeze fly, abullddon, and Aamon can use this spell against the party fro 55~67 damage.
Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride[edit | edit source]
Due to the removal of Kacrack from the spell list, Kacrackle's range has been increased to target all foes on screen. In exchange, the damage range has been reduced slightly to 80~104. It is learned by the following playable characters and costs 12 MP to cast.

The caster's magical might can be pushed beyond 999 thanks to buff abilities, changing the calculation to (Magical might - 999) /4 + 376~388 for a true cap of 501~513 at 1,500 magical might.
As X is a 3D game the ability for Kacrack to harm multiple monsters depends on the proximity of those enemies to the target monster the caster selects when casting the spell. The range for the target is 15 meters, with the spread damage effect extending to 6 meters.
- In the Offline version of the game, the Hero will learn Kacrack as a Mage at level 51, being the only character who can cast it. It inflicts ice-elemental damage to all enemies.

Kacrack costs 24 MP to cast and inflicts moderate Crack-type spell damage to all enemies. It cannot be learned naturally by any vocation, but rather by equipping certain weapons such as the glumbrella and godbird sceptre. In Japanese, this version is the recurring Mahyado spell.
Another version of Kacrack can be learned by Grand Sorcerers at level 40, costing 22 MP to cast. It also inflicts moderate Crack-type spell damage to all enemies. This version is the older Hyadain spell from III and IV and even uses a similar animation seen in remake versions.

Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai[edit | edit source]
Kacrack is first cast by Dai on Dermline Island in order to counteract the effects of Hadlar's Kafrizz spell, demonstrating a level of magic beyond his abilities. The sage Marin also casts Kacrack against Flazzard during the battle at Valge Tower, but it proves ineffective, as he is able to absorb the effects of the spell with the icy side of his body. In the series, Kacrack is depicted as a compressed blast of ice-cold blue energy sent forth from the caster's hands.
Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai: A Hero's Bonds[edit | edit source]
Kacrack appeared as a normal spell for both Matoriv and Nova and as a spell finisher for Popp, with the Luminary Leader being able to use all three versions. Matoriv's version inflicted piercing magical Ice damage over a small area and temporarily raised the caster's Ice damage. Nova's version inflicted magical Ice damage over a small area and temporarily lowered the target's physical and magical defence for a short time. Popp's version dealt magical Ice damage over a wide area. Matoriv's version was unlocked when he joined the party and could be improved further by receiving White Quartz Staffs from Treasure Hunts or from the Shop Exchange, while Nova's Kacrack scrolls could have been received by playing during the "Northern Hero" event or from the Shop Exchange. Popp's version was unlockable by receiving the Siren's Staff from limited Treasure Hunts.
Matoriv and Nova's Kacrack spells are actually named Hyadain in the Japanese version of the game, sharing a name with Kacrack from both Dragon Quest III and IV, while Popp's is named Mahyado.
