Flail (weapon type)
Flails were group-targeting weapons that appeared in the earlier games in the series. Effectively whips for warrior-types, the gave a wider attack range to characters that could not equip boomerangs or the aforementioned whips.
Beginning with the weapon-derivative nature of skills first seen in Dragon Quest VIII, flails were phased out of the series altogether with the ninth entry.
