The Hero is the main character of Dragon Quest V. Like all protagonists in the Dragon Quest series, the player provides him with a name of his choosing.

Later on in the game you meet Bianca again in a mountain village while looking for two rings for Ludman's daughter, Flora's, marraige so you can get the Zenithian Shield. She accompanies you back to the town of Salabona where Ludman asks that you choose to marry either Flora or Bianca. Whoever you choose will marry you and travel together with you. When you reach your kingdom of Granvania you will discover that your wife is pregnant and she will stay in the castle to rest. After returning from the cave of trials you find out that your wife is giving birth and soon after she has a baby boy and girl. After a night of celebrating yoru wife is kidnapped in the middle of the night by a monster. While trying to rescue her you learn that she has the blood of the legendary hero in her and you are defeated and turned to stone for several years until your kids come and break the spell on you. When you arrive at the great temple later in the game you discover that your wife who has also been turned to stone is there and is finally rescued from the clutches of evil. With the family reunited its up to you to defeat the evil of the world.
Unlike a majority of Dragon Quest games, which focus on the chosen one destined to strike down evil, Dragon Quest V tells the story of the prophet who guides and aids this chosen one, making for a unique experience. The player also has the choice of having the Hero marry (and later have children with) either Bianca or Flora, or, in the DS remake, Deborah. Because of this setup, the game follows the Hero over a period of 20 years, another unique element. The hero is a very versatile fighter. He can equip swords, boomerangs, whips, staffs, and flails. He also is very good in magic, although his spells mainly revolve aroung healing magic. He can learn Heal, Antidote, Infernos, Healmore, X-Ray, Outside, Infermore, Robmagic, Healall, Infermost, and Chance, a spell that has random effect ranging from nothing to shooting stars leaving every enemy and party member with one HP. He can equip the best equipment in the game, the metal king sword, helm, armour, and shield.
