It is a special robe that has carried a variety of special properties throughout its appearances in the series. It provides extra protection for the wearer in battle if they are under the effects of {{Sleep}} or become {{Paralyze}}d in its first three appearances in the series: {{IV}}, {{V}}, and {{VIII}}. In {{IX}} it gives the wearer resistance to being put to sleep in the first place, and in {{XI}} it offers no protection against either ailment and instead heals {{HP}} every turn.

The robe of serenity was originally depicted as a long pink mantle that covers the wearer's head and reaches down to the ground. There are several dangling emblems of stars and moons at the hem, on the front, and on the hood of the robe. It is also worn with a small gold circlet around the hood. In ''IX'' and ''A Hero's Bonds'', the robe's design was changed to a more traditional robe with the same gold crescent moon and star designs on the sleeves and the hem.

There are several dangling emblems of stars and moons at the hem, on the front, and on the hood of the robe. It is also worn with a small gold circlet around the hood. In IX and A Hero's Bonds, the robe's design was changed to a more traditional robe with the same gold crescent moon and star designs on the sleeves and the hem.
