The Hero is the main character of Dragon Quest V. Like all protagonists in the Dragon Quest series, the player provides him with a name of his or her choosing.
It is worth noting that the naming of the Hero has some bearing in-game, as the start will have his father recommending the name Madason, but will quickly agree with what the mother says which is also the name chosen by the player. Interestingly, if the player chooses the name Madason then the father will recommend Erdrick instead.
Appearance and Personality
The Hero of Dragon Quest V is regularly depicted in a purple turban and shroud with a white tunic underneath, an oaken staff held in his right arm.

Unlike a majority of Dragon Quest games, which focus on the chosen one destined to strike down evil, Dragon Quest V tells the story of the individual who guides and aids this chosen one, making for a unique experience. The player also has the choice of having the Hero marry (and later have children with)Trivia either Bianca or Nera, or, in the DS remake, Debora. Because of this setup, the game follows the Hero over a period of 20 years, another unique element.
Generation 1
The hero starts off as a young boy who is journeying with his father Pankraz on a boat. As the hero and Pankraz are getting of the boat the hero meets Nera who he will meet later in the game. When they arrive in the town of Whealbrook the hero also meets Sancho and Bianca whom he later befriends. While Pankraz takes care of his own business the hero goes off to have adventures of his own and befriends Bianca and the sabrecat Saber. After Pankraz finishes his business he and the hero leave for Coburg castle where Pankraz and the hero are in charge of keeping an eye on the young prince Harry but when Harry is abducted Pankraz rushes off to the cave where he was taken and the hero follows soon after. In the cave the hero meets up with Pankraz and finds Harry but is ambushed by monsters. Pankraz stays behind to let the hero and Harry escape and when the hero reaches then end of the cave he runs into Bishop Ladja, a demon who easily defeats the party. Pankraz catches up to his son and then gives his life to save the hero and Harry but not before telling the hero about his past and how Pankraz was once a king but left on a journey to find the hero's mother after she was kidnapped by monsters. Afterwards the hero is sent to a slave camp.
Generation 2
Ten years pass, and the hero is now 16 years old. He is somewhat grown up and manages to finally escape along with Harry and another woman.
Later on he is reunited with Bianca in a mountain village while looking for two rings for Rodrigo's daughter, Nera's, marriage so he can get the Zenithian Shield. Bianca accompanies the hero back to the town where Rodrigo asks that the hero choose to marry either Nera or Bianca (or Debora, in the DS version). Whoever the hero marries travels with him, the two eventually reaching the kingdom of Gotha. On the way to Gotha, it is discovered that the hero's wife is pregnant and she will stay in the castle to rest. After returning from the cave of trials the hero learns that his wife is giving birth, and soon after she has a baby boy and girl. After a night of celebrating the coronation of the hero as the new king of Gotha, the hero's wife is kidnapped in the middle of the night by a monster. While trying to rescue her he learns that she has the blood of the legendary hero in her and the hero and his wife are turned into stone statues.
Generation 3
Eight years pass before the hero is discovered by Sancho and the hero's children. With the spell broken, the hero and his children search for their mother, the wife of the hero. When the hero arrives at the great temple later in the game he discovers that his wife, still a stone statue, is there and he finally rescues her from the clutches of evil. With the family reunited its up to the hero to defeat the evil of the world.
Equipment and Stats
He can equip certain swords, boomerangs, whips, staffs, flails, and even the metal king series of equipment. His HP growth is very high, likely to balance out his low defense stat, with all other attributes varying in growth throughout the game.
Abilities
The hero is a very versatile fighter. He also is very good in magic, although, as is the case with most heroes, his spells mainly revolve around healing and support. He can learn Heal, Squelch, Woosh, Healmore, Peep, Evac, Swoosh, Absorb magic, Fullheal, Zing, Kaswoosh, Zoom and Hocus-Pocus.
