Dragon Quest: Your Story (ドラゴンクエスト ユア・ストーリー Doragon Kuesuto Yua Sutōrī) is a 2019 Japanese CGI anime film loosely based on the story of Dragon Quest V. It was first announced on February 13th, 2019 and was featured on 313 screens in Japan on August 2nd, 2019 by Toho.[2]

Plot


Production

On February 13th, 2019 the news program News Zero hosted by the television program [[wikipedia:Nippon TV|Nippon TV] featured an interview with Takashi Yamazaki and Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii, both of whom revealed that a 3DCG animated movie derived from Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride would be released nationwide on August 2nd, 2019 under the name of Dragon Quest: Your Story.[3][4]

Takashi Yamazaki was the screenplay writer and chief director, with Ryuichi Yagi and Makoto Hanafusa as additional directors.[3][4] The script was adapted from the original title by Yuji Horii, who served as supervisor for the film.[3][4] Koichi Sugiyama was lead composer with the soundtrack featuring iconic Dragon Quest music.[3]

The first trailer debuted on April 4 with 13 cast members and their roles being announced.[5] Many other cast members were revealed on May 4.[6] A second trailer was released on June 19 along with the theatrical poster that would appear in theaters.[7]

Saori Kumi, the author of the Dragon Quest V novel filed a lawsuit against the film's production crew stating that the protagonist's name, Ryuka (Luka) was taken from the novel and being used without her permission.[9]

The film was ill-recieved by Japanese fans due to the Iseka-like nature of the ending, deviating from the original plot of Dragon Quest V.[10]Critism was also directed at the absence of Akira Toriyama's artsyle and his character designs.[11]
