Sap is a recurring spell in the DQSeries. Introduced in DQ3, it has a 100% chance to lower a single enemy's Defence if the target has no resistance, contrasting the group-targeting Kasap. Early on, this spell is useful on durable enemies, including bosses. However, as the game progresses, some MFamiliess gain resistance to this spell and total immunity becomes common. ==Appearances== ===DQ3=== The Priest and Sage both learn Sap at level 8 and it reduces the defence of one enemy to 0 for the entire battle. The orochi sword when used as an item in battle emulates the effect of Sap. ===DQ4=== Borya and Maya Mahabala both learn this spell at level 5. It costs 3 MP to cast and reduces the defence of one enemy to 0 for 4~7 turns in the remakes and for the entire battle in the original version. The enemies buffalo wing, splatypunk, strangler fish, and hoodoo gooroo can use this spell against the Party 4. ===DQ5=== Sap costs 3 MP and reduces one foe's defence to 0 for the duration of battle. {| cellspacing="0" cellpadding="2" border="1" !style="background:#77479B; color: white;"|Name !style="background:#77479B; color: white;"|Level |- |Rotten apple R||3 |- |Beastmaster R||5 |- |Pocus poppet R||7 |- |Wiz pip R||10 |- |Hoodlum R||20 |} Will-o'-the-whips, Haunted Housekeeper, mermen, and quadrahead use it only as enemies. ===DQ6=== Sap is already known by Ashlynn upon joining the Party 6, and is learned by the Hero 6 at level 7. No other characters can obtain this spell. It costs 3 MP to cast and reduces one enemy's defence by 50% for the duration of battle. The enemies stumpkin, bloodcreeper, malevolantern, and marine spirit can use this spell against the Party 6. ===DQ7=== Sap costs 3 MP to cast. Maribel Mayde learns it at level 4. Anybody who has taken up the Mage vocation learns it at rank 4, while those who take the path of the Mandrake major learns it at level 2. Sap costs 3 MP and reduces one foe's defence by 50% for 6~9 turns. It can be used by the enemies whopper hopper, crested viper, Tinpot Dictator, wiz pip, barracuda, and Setesh the Punisher. ===DQ8=== Jessica Albert already knows the Sap spell upon joining the Party 8. It costs 3 MP for her to cast Sap and it reduces one foe's defence by 50% for 7~10 turns. In the version, Morrie can learn the spell by investing 8 points into his Passion skillset. It can be cast by the enemies capsichum, buffalo wing, sea dragon, and mermen. ===DQ9=== Sap is learned by Mages at level 7 and Armamentalists at level 5. It costs 2 MP to cast, and will improve in accuracy once the caster's Magical Might reaches 50. Once the stat value surpasses 999, the spell will become 100% accurate barring MFamilies resistance. ===DQ10=== Sap is learned by Minstrels at level 10 and costs 2 MP to cast. ===DQ11=== Veronica 11 and Rab have already learned Sap when they join the party. It costs 2 MP to cast and will lower one enemy's Defence by 75% for 4~6 turns, with a base accuracy of 50% and 100% at 799 Magical Might. ===DQM=== This ability can be learned by a variety of MFamiliess. Sap has a base success chance of 60% and a maximum success chance of 80% at 3,999 wisdom. The spell is learned through the Dark Artist, Enfeebler, Hexcommunicator, Irritant, Magic Maven, Thrill-Seeker, and Zam Afficionado talents. ===DQTreasures=== Sap costs 5 MP and will lower one enemy's Defence by 50% for a limited time. It is learned by Dread drackies and Shadows, and will naturally upgrade into Kasap. ===DQWalk=== Sap is learned by Mages and Sages at level 15.
