The '''Great Pit of Giaga''' is a key location in the [[Overworld (Dragon Quest III)|overworld]] of {{DQ3}}.

The cave is on an island to the right of the [[Necrogond Shrine]]

It is only accessible via [[Ramia]], and serves as the sole connection between the {{Hero 3}}'s world and the [[Alefgard|underworld]].

Before defeating [[Baramos]], the pit is guarded by two men and completely surrounded by a wall. This prevents anyone from entering the pit.  

After the defeat of [[Baramos]], the pit has been enlarged by [[Zoma]]'s minions in preparation to raid the overworld. Only one of the guards is still alive and the pit is now easily accessible, allowing entrance into the [[Alefgard|Underworld]].

*Prior to [[Baramos]]' defeat, a guard informs the {{Hero 3}} and {{Party 3}} that [[confusion]] can be cured by striking the inflicted ally.  The [[Cell phone]] port ironically keeps this advise even with the mechanic removed.

The pit's walls now include the same colossal statues seen in the [[Maw of the Necrogond]]. The walls are destroyed when [[Zoma]] enters the world to make his declaration of war in [[Aliahan]], leaving an impenetrable miasma lingering in the pit. This can only be cleared by the [[Sphere of Light]], meaning the player must speak with the [[Castle of the Dragon Queen|Dragon Queen]] before entering the underworld and prevents the player from facing Zoma without the crucial gem.

When the {{Hero 3}} and the {{Party 3}} leap into the pit a cutscene will play showing their descent, based on the opening of the ''[[Dragon Quest 25th Anniversary Collection]]'' released in 2011. During the end credits the pit is still shown to be open despite what the in-game text implies upon Zoma's defeat, with the minister of the [[Necrogond Shrine]] and the lone remaining guard looking over the abyss.
