Very little is known about the game; however, [[Yuji Horii]] stated the game will be much "darker" and adult-themed, will put more focus on decision-making, and will have a revamped combat system, though specific details were not given. In September 2021, an exploit in NVIDIA's GeForce Now service revealed a PC release to be in development. As the franchise's music composer, and character and monster designer; [[Kōichi Sugiyama]] and [[Akira Toriyama]]; passed away in September, 30th, 2021 and March, 1st, 2024 respectively; ''Dragon Quest XII'' would become the final mainline series entry to involve Mr. Sugiyama and Mr. Toriyama.
