The vocation system of ''X'' is similar to the one in ''IX''. The player's character always has a vocation attributed to them, which can be changed virtually anytime. Like in ''IX'', level progression is tied to each individual vocation instead of the character.

Unlike past games, the player does not need to reach [[Alltrades Abbey]] to start changing vocations. Instead, they just need to talk to priests who come from the Abbey and are placed at every tavern.

At first, the player has access to 6 vocations. Like in ''IX'', there are quests that unlock new vocations once complete. There are currently 25 vocations, but since it is an online game, it keeps receiving updates, with new vocations being added every now and then.
