In chapter 23, while cornered by Hadlar's lieutenant [[Gangadia]], [[Matoriv]] recalls a lesson from his master about the potential dangers when combining magic of different types. Taunting Gangadia into finishing him off with his strongest fire spell, Matoriv retaliates with an ice spell precisely matched to the [[Death Troll]]'s level of power. The two spells begin to fuse together before detonating in an explosion which wipes out the majority of Hadlar's army, with the two mages barely escaping death by using [[Zoom]] to escape the brunt of the blast. Observing the crater left by the fusion of fire and ice, Matoriv mutters that if he could learn to call upon that power whenever he wanted, no enemy could stand against him.

By the time of Matoriv and Gangadia's rematch in chapter 31-32, the Grand Sorcerer has refined Medroa into a usable spell. Gangadia, having tried and failed to master the spell himself, now regards Matoriv with great respect, explaining that he wished to separate him from [[Avan]] since even Master [[Hadlar]] would now struggle to win against both of them at once. Gangadia's battle strategy revolves primarily around physical rushdown to disrupt Medroa's lengthy casting time, plus the use of [[Puff!]] and similar spells to bombard Matoriv with nonmagical flames which he cannot fuse with ice. He is defeated after Matoriv distracts him with a small Medroa explosion created by casting a precisely-downtuned [[Crack]] spell at the lingering flames of an earlier [[Frizz]].
