The Prince of Cannock (サマルトリアの王子 Prince of Samaltria) is a playable character in Dragon Quest II, and is one of three descendents of Erdrick who journeys to defeat Hargon after his attack on Moonbrooke, and is the second playable character added to the party after the Prince of Midenhall. He also has a sister who's the Princess of Cannock.

The Prince of Cannock's abilities are a mix between both of his cousins, the Prince of Midenhall and the Princess of Moonbrooke. Though he is physically strong, he is weaker than the Prince of Midenhall, and while he can use magic, most of his spells are not as powerful as those available to the Princess of Moonbrooke. In terms of statistics and spell choices, the Prince of Cannock has more in common with the other Heroes of the series.

Upon learning of the tragedy that befell Moonbrooke, the Prince of Cannock set out on a journey, first travelling to the Wellspring of the Hero. Later, he met the Prince of Midenhall at the inn in Leftwyne, where the two cousins joined forces and began travelling together.

Appearance and Personality
He is shorter than the Prince of Midenhall, but taller than the Princess of Moonbrooke. In the Japanese box art and all other versions of the game, the prince has shaggy orange hair and wears a green tabard with Erdrick's crest on the chest and an orange cape attached over black clothes. He also wears green gloves and boots, as well as a pair of goggles on his head. In the American box art for the NES version of the game, he is still wearing the odd goggles on his head, but his tunic has been replaced with a full suit of green armor. The Prince is also seen carrying a green shield with a red jewel in the middle and wields a rapier.

In the Japanese version, the Prince is described as a slacker, a drinker, and an overall really fun guy; however, in the NES American version the Prince of Cannock is reffered a studious young man immersed in his studies. This is presumably due to the heavy censorship Nintendo of America enforced during the late 80s and early 90s. Later versions are loyal to the Japanese script and refer to the Prince the same way.

Later in the game in all versions besides the NES original, the prince becomes ill after staying at the inn in Beran. The other heroes can travel to a small island with a single tree tile upon it and retrieve a Yggdrasil Leaf in order to cure him and continue adventuring, or may leave him behind. Doing such only slightly affects the edning of the game, where the prince's dialogue bemoans how awful his luck is.

Equipment
The Prince of Cannock can equip a wide variety of weapons and armor, though not as many as the Prince of Midenhall, nor as potent. When fighting Hargon, he should be wearing: Magic Armor, the Iron Spear or Falcon Sword, and the Shield of Strength. In remake versions of the game, he has access to a wider variety of equipment, such as Erdrick's Sword and the Aurora Blade.
They are Bran, Glynn, Talint, Numor, Lars, Orfeo, Artho, and Esgar. In the GBC version, the possible names are: Frey, John, Art, Gary, Karl, Eric, Drew, and Paul. It is possible to manually change his name by putting in a code at the title screen.

*In the Japanese version, the possible names are Tonnura, Arthur, Cain, Cookie, Conan, Sukesan, Paulos, and Rand.

*His name in the Japanese CD theater drama and novelization is Conan (コナン), one of his eight default names from the game. Other books used some of the others, such as Cain (カイン) and Cookie (クッキー).
The Prince of Cannock is one of many past Dragon Quest characters who come to stay at the Quester's Rest as part of the bonus wifi content. He became available for download through DQVC on October 1, 2010, with the name Prince Princeton. He donates equipment resembling his outfit if the player meets certain requirements, and is classified as an Armamentalist. His personality remains unchanged, but he speaks with a slightly formal tone.

DQ11
When the Luminary visits Cannock and speaks with the king, the monarch explains that his son vanished in a puff of smoke the moment he declared his intent to vanquish the Children of Hargon, and asks the Luminary to seek him out. True to form, the Prince of Cannock is always one step ahead of the party, and the group must visit the Roamer Encampment, the Imperial Pantry of Parthenia, and Whealbrook before being told the young man is wandering in the Neverglade forest.
}}
The Mad cap (Mysterious hat in the NES and Magic helmet in the GBC) is a rather unique headgear mainly found in the early entries of the Dragon Quest series.
Appearances
Dragon Quest II
The hat reduces MP consumption in battle by 25% (rounded up) and provides a Defense of +4 (+8 in the remakes.)

They are dropped by Tyrannodactyls, Pazuzu, and Hargon with a rate of 1, and at a rate of 1 by Liquid Metal Slimes in the remakes. Fortunately, each of the remake versions also feature a mad cap obtainable in a chest found in the Cave to Rendarak. It is the only helmet equippable by the Prince of Cannock and the Princess of Moonbrooke.

Dragon Quest III
The hat reduces MP consumption by 25% (rounded up) as before, and provides Defense of +8. They are dropped by Firn fiend with a rate of 1/128, and may be equipped by priests, mages, and sages. The MP reduction rate can be combined with the Glombolero for extra-economic casting. Because of the minuscule drop rate and the absence of any chests that contain the topper, it is strongly recommended to bring a thief when attempting to snag one.

Dragon Quest VII
Returning after a long absence, the Mad Cap can be equipped by everyone except for Kiefer, increases defence by +8, style by +5, and now cuts MP costs by 50%.

In the 3DS remake, a superior hat called the Raving Mad Cap is available for the above mentioned characters. It increases defence by +13, style by +8, and cuts spell costs by 75%. Unfortunately, the game's programming does not allow this to stack with the Sage and Druid MP discounts due to only selecting the best reduction rate instead of adding them. The cap is available upon the first completion of the DLC Tablet True Steel by defeating the Überkilling machine

Dragon Quest VIII
The Mad cap only appears in the 3DS port of Dragon Quest VIII, being available in the bonus dungeon. It may be equipped by everyone, meaning that if the Hero has mastered his Courage skillset, he can cast Omniheal for a scant 14MP. It bolsters defence by +32.
Influence on Pokémon
In a 1998 interview, Pokémon creator Satoshi Tajiri revealed that his frustrations over obtaining the Mad Cap were one of the main inspirations for the data exchanging feature his series would become famous for. To wit, he explained he felt a great deal of envy when his childhood friend (and Pocket Monster illustrator) Ken Sugimori managed to get two of them on his save file, and had absolutely no way to share the unneeded one with Tajiri.

The Prince of Midenhall, also known as the Prince of Lorasia (ローレシアの王子), is one of the three playable characters from Dragon Quest II. He is a descendant of Erdrick who responds to the sudden rising threat of Hargon. He inherited all of his ancestor's physical strength, but unlike his cousins the Prince of Cannock and the Princess of Moonbrooke, he cannot use magic, and as such is the only Dragon Quest main hero who doesn't possess any magical ability. The Japanese version depicts the Prince of Midenhall as a man of convictions who is determined to protect his kingdom and his world. This also holds true in the American version.

The name given to the hero in the Japanese CD theater drama and novelizations is Allen (アレン).

Appearance and Personality
The Hero wears blue for the most part, though the goggles that rest on his helmet are brown. He wears a blue tunic over form-fitting black clothing, blue shoes with light blue socks, and blue gloves. Across his chest is a swordbelt with a scabbard attached to the back. He also wears a brown belt around his waist with a small brown pouch on it and a belt buckle in the shape of Erdrick's symbol. His sword is typical aside from the hand cover built into the hilt, and his shield is adorned with Erdrick's symbol. His hair is only ever shown in the artwork of the tectonic plate, where it's shown to be black in colour and trimmed short, though with notable bangs.

Even though the Hero is a silent protagonist and his personality is open for the player to define, a strong sense of justice can be seen in the beginning of the game, as he sets out to stop Hargon's evil cult without so much as a "But thou must" question from the King.

Although the Hero is the only nameable character, he remains equal in stature with his 2 companions in Dragon Quest II, the Prince of Cannock and the Princess of Moonbrooke. All 3 are descendants of Erdrick. This varies from other games in the series where only the hero is of notable birth compared to his party companions.
Equipment
As the most physically powerful of the trio, the Prince of Midenhall has access to the widest range of weapons and armor. He can equip every weapon and piece of armor available, including heavier ones that his cousins cannot use, such as the Sledgehammer. This means he is also the only character who has access to the legendary Erdrick's equipment, and as such, should use them when facing Hargon.
