Zoma, the Master Archfiend of the Dark World, is the final villain and chief antagonist of DQ3.

Characteristics
Near the end of the game, Zoma is revealed to be the master of the archfiend Baramos, whom had been previously alluded to as the final boss to the game. Upon the death of his chief servant, Zoma's voice roars throughout the throne room of Aliahan castle, stating that his intent to plunge the "world of light" into darkness and that the hero is a fool for assuming that he had won peace. This proclamation sends the king of Aliahan into a deep despair, forbidding the hero and company from speaking of Zoma.

Zoma is a demon of unfathomable power, whose sorcery is so great that he was able to imprison the kingdom of Alefgard in a shroud of eternal night. Due to this, he was able to sustain himself on the despair of the people trapped within, bolstering his physical might so much that he was able to shatter a sword made of Orichalcum, albeit after a prolonged effort of three years.

Zoma resides in his Citadel in Alefgard, where he feeds on the fear and despair of the kingdom's inhabitants. Being an embodiment of evil, Zoma is weakened by bright light and harmed by all healing magic. Zoma is on the basement floor of the castle along with three sub-bosses--the King Hydra along with the ghost and the skeleton of Baramos. He approaches and berates to the hero prior to allowing his three subordinates to fight the hero's party before him.

Upon being defeated by the hero (as well as Terry in DQM), Zoma displays some degree of nobility, a surprising quality considering his overall malevolent nature. He genuinely congratulates the hero and companions for their victory, as opposed to his right-hand man Baramos, who threatens and curses the hero down to his last breath. He also demonstrates clairvoyance, as he is able to foresee darkness yet to come and that the hero will either be too old or dead and thus unable to vanquish said evil.
Remove his shield immediately with the Sphere of Light; without it, Zoma is immune to everything you can throw at him. On top of this, he will regenerate 90~110 HP per round, minimizing any damage players can inflict between healing sessions.

Once the cloak of ice is removed, Zoma's defensive capabilities will plummet considerably: Sap, Zap, and all forms of fire will hit 100% of the time, and his regeneration will be nixed.Woosh spells have a 30% chance to connect, but a priest is better off casting healing spells to inflict damage when they aren't restoring the party.
Bishop Ladja is a character in DQ5. He is one of the primary antagonists in the story, and is responsible for much of the hardships the Hero endures.

Characteristics
Bishop Ladja is one of the highest-ranking members of the Order of Zugzwang, frequently being paired with other cultists for missions on the surface world. He is a being of utmost evil, delighting in causing untold grief for others, spreading misery through the land by orchestrating political upheavals and ordering the abduction of innocents for slave labor. Behind this sadistic persona lies a cunning intellect and shrewd sense of practicality, as Ladja will do all he can to snuff out obstacles to the Order's goals before they have the chance to fully materialize.

While Ladja appears to be outranked by King Korol, he is the true right-hand man of the devil and did not hesitate to kill the King off when he failed to defeat the protagonists at Crocodilopolis. Ironically, Ladja's final moments would show that he is just as dispensable as all the other minions of Grandmaster Nimzo, with his master forsaking aiding him for his repeated failures and allowing the group of heroes to penetrate the defenses of Mt. Zugzwang.

Story
Bishop Ladja is first seen in the Ancient Ruins, blocking a young Hero and Prince Harry from escaping, and easily defeats them in an unwinnable battle. When Pankraz arrives, he summons Kon the Knight and Slon the Rook to kill him, but fail to harm the man. Ladja changes tactics and levels his scythe against the hero's neck, threatening to kill the boy if Pankraz resists any further. The doomed father is beaten senseless by Kon and Slon, and is slain by Ladja with Kafrizzle mere seconds after telling the boy that his mother still lives. Mocking Pankraz in death, Ladja notices a peculiar bauble among the hero's possessions, and crushes it between his palms while uttering foreboding words of relief at it's destruction. Their business finished, Ladja and his minions carry the boys off to Mount Azimuth as slave labor for constructing a temple for the Order of Zugzwang, ignoring Sabre and expecting the cat to return to the wild.

He is not seen again until the events of Knightmare Towers, after the hero defeats Kon and rescues his wife. He reveals that the woman is of Zenithian descent and is destined to bear the legendary hero, so he petrifies both of them to prevent this. Unbeknownst to him, she had already given birth to the legendary hero, who along with his twin sister would eventually rescued their father eight years hence.

The hero and his children eventually encounter Ladja in the Talon Tower, searching for one of the dragon eyes that can restore the castle of Zenithia to it's full power to destroy it. After a boss battle, he flees. He is seen again in the Crocodilopolis, where he kills off King Korol, who was no longer needed by Nimzo after the reptiles' defeat. He is encountered for the last time in Mt. Zugzwang, where the hero and party finally avenge Pankraz's death.
Remake alterations
Ladja's role in the story of Dragon Quest V was expanded upon in the remakes.
*In the PlayStation 2 & Nintendo DS Version, he is the one to imprison The Hero and his wife in stone, whereas the Super Famicom Version had Kon the Knight doing so.
*In the original SNES release he dies following his loss at Talon Tower, whereas in the remakes, he showed up at Crocodilopolis, he kills King Korol as punishment for his failure, while in the Super Famicom version, the voice of Grandmaster Nimzo did so.

Etymology
Ladja is an alternate transliteration of ladya (ладья), the Russian word for the rook chess piece. This is likely an mix-up with Slon the Rook, whose own name means "bishop".
Dhoulmagus (ドルマゲス, Dorumagesu) is an important figure in Dragon Quest VIII. Until his defeat at the hands of the Hero's party, he is apparently the player's central enemy in their journey. Lord Rhapthorne, however, is the true villain of the game.

Dhoulmagus is a jester who came to Trodain Castle. His deep desire to be the greatest magician of all time and resentment towards those who laughed at him fueled his breaking into the castle's secret chamber to obtain the legendary scepter of Rhapthorne. Almost immediately, he was overwhelmed by Rhapthorne's power and made to do such dastardly things as his pawn. Possessed by Rhapthorne, he killed his first four victims: his former master Rylus, the swordsman Alistair (Jessica's brother), Abbot Francisco, and Mr. Golding, the casino owner. The Hero and party eventually defeated him after a long chase, where the scepter's dark influence transformed him into a monstrous creature. Upon his defeat, King Trode discovered that the curse on him and his daughter, Medea, had not been broken. Shortly after, Jessica would retrieve the sceptre, and become enthralled by it's malicious power.

In the 3DS version of the game, extra flashback scenes have been added that detail Dhoulmagus's backstory and the circumstances that led to becoming the unwitting pawn of Rhapthorne.

Appearance and Personality
Dhoulmagus is a tall, physically imposing man whose appearance has become twisted due to the influence of Rhapthorne's scepter. His skin has taken on a deathly, grey pallor and his long hair is white. He has a long, gaunt face with a prominent brow, a widow's peak on his forehead, and he wears black eyeliner, lipstick, and nail polish on his long fingernails. He also has red makeup in the shape of diamonds on each eye. On his left ear, he wears a dangling gold earring.

His costume is a highly exaggerated version of a court jester's. He wears a doublet with alternating red and purple fabric with slashes ending in a puffy ball of the other color (purple on red fabric and vice versa) that reached down to his ankles. The doublet has large leg-of-mutton shoulder pads and solid red sleeves. The back of the tunic has a long purple cape with black lining that ends in two tails with puffy red balls at the end like his doublet. He wears orange trousers and black leather knee-length boots. Prior to his transformation, Dhoulmagus had light skin and his long hair was black. He still wore black makeup.

As a normal human, Dhoulmagus was a nervous and shy wreck of a man, having endured years of mistreatment from his master, Rylus. He was a weak magician whose magic could barely be considered parlour tricks, but he strongly desired to become powerful by any means necessary. Rylus forbade his young apprentice from reading any of his grimoires on magic, as he felt that Dhoulmagus still had yet to grasp the most basic principles of magic. This led to him breaking into Castle Trodain and stealing Rhapthorne's scepter, as Dhoulmagus knew it would grant him the power he so desired. Despite his timid personality, Dhoulmagus displayed a cunning wit and resourcefulness, as he was able to disguise himself as a jester and charm King Trode with his sleight-of-hand.

Much like how Jessica had completely changed once she was in possession of the scepter, Dhoulmagus's personality had taken a complete 180, becoming devious and strong-willed. No longer was he the weak and cowardly sage's apprentice from Farebury. He showed some remaining glimmers of his former personality before his death at the hands of the Hero and his party.

After his first defeat in the Dark Ruins, Dhoulmagus undergoes a demonic transformation, leaving almost none of his physical features intact. His skin turns blue, his eyes become yellow, and purple fur covers his shoulders, upper arms, and thighs. Dhoulmagus's body becomes noticeably more muscular and his feet turn into large talons like that of a bird. Most notably, a large pair of red wings sprouts from his back, giving him the power of flight and an extra weapon as he can shoot out feathers like sharp arrows. He also grows a long tail, large pointed ears, and a pair of horns on his forehead.

Characteristics
His human form is quite formidable, but his demonic form is truly powerful and not to be underestimated by the player's party.

Story
Dhoulmagus served as the long-suffering apprentice to the sage Rylus in Farebury, where he was forced to perform menial tasks such as cleaning, rather than being taught magic. One day when his master was away, Dhoulmagus began reading one of Rylus's grimoires, where he learned about the existence of Rhapthorne's scepter and the amazing power it possessed. Rylus discovered this and became furious at his apprentice, as he felt that Dhoulmagus was barely a novice when it came to magic. He snuck away to Castle Trodain, disguised as a court jester and gained an audience with King Trode and Princess Medea. The king and the princess were charmed by Dhoulmagus's magic tricks and Trode invited the magician to stay at the castle.

That night, he used the same magic trick to knock out a castle guard and sneak into the chamber where Rhapthorne's scepter was sealed. It was then that Dhoulmagus unleashed its power, encasing the castle and its inhabitants in thorny vines and turned Trode and Medea into a troll and a horse respectively. With his newfound power, Dhoulmagus returned to visit his master Rylus in Farebury. Rylus was just about to complete an elixir which would unlock Dhoulmagus's latent magical abilities. Rylus was aghast at what his apprentice had done, but it was too late for him as Dhoulmagus decided to take revenge and kill him with the scepter. Afterwards, Dhoulmagus set Rylus's house ablaze and set off to find the other sages.

Lord Rhapthorne is the central antagonist of Dragon Quest VIII. A demon of untold legend, Rhapthorne is the party's final opponent in their quest to rid the world of an evil curse.

Characteristics
Rhapthorne has the upper half of an overweight man with a black goatee. He has two large horns coming from his head. His lower half appears bulbous, with a ring of spikes protruding from the bottom. Rhapthorne's skin is purple, with flame-like designs in a darker shade of purple. He has two small bat wings on his back.

Rhapthorne had power over the World of Darkness and planned to take control of the World of Light, but was stopped by the Seven Sages with the help of Empyrea, the Godbird. He returned centuries later to kill the heirs of Seven Sages and take over the World of Light.

In a break from the series' tradition of the Archfiend being a distant figure removed from much of the narrative, Rhapthorne is actually present from the very beginning of the game thanks to his possession of Dhoulmagus. He is aware of the party's actions against him from the start, and as such his loathing for them is significantly more personal than that of final foes past.
*Rhapthorne (second form) is a great three-slot Rank X monster. He can be synthesized by combining his first form with Zoma.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 Professional
Both forms appear as separate monsters in Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 Professional.

Trivia
*Rhapthorne's diminutive first form bears a slight resemblance to real world Sea Angels. Both feature prominent bio-luminescence in their abdomens, stubby appendages, and the Angel's antennae approximate with Rhapthorne's horns.
*When possessing both Dhoulmagus and Leopold, both hosts developed large, black-feathered wings reminiscent of a bird of prey. Neither of Rhapthorne's actually bodies have these traits, with his petite form bearing no wings at all, and his larger form having smaller bat-like wings.
*In Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2, the evil scepter Rhapthorne weilds is called Malevolence.
Cloudsgate Citadel is the name of the bonus dungeon that appears in the 16-bit remake and ports of DQ3. It is a homage to the eponymous flying castle of the Zenithia trilogy, which were the three most recent titles in the series when the SNES remake of III was released in 1996.
Appearances
DQ3
The citadel is reached by stepping into the light of the stained glass windows at the Dragon Queen's palace, although this only occurs if the player has already defeated Zoma and seen the ending, earning the "Erdrick" title on their save file on the loading screen.

The party will find themselves on a small, floating island surrounded by thick clouds. On this island is a deep cave, containing many rooms resembling those seen previously. The floors include:
*The 2nd and 5th floor of Gondo Cave.
*The 1st floor of Orochi's Lair.
*The 2nd floor of the Pyramid (the stairway on the upper righthand area leads to a room modeled after the basement of Tantegel Castle).
*The 2nd floor of the Underground Lake (The healing spring is also present).
*The 1st floor of Gondo Cave.
*The prison room of Manoza Castle.

Many fierce monsters populate this dungeon, including Baramos doppelgangers known as Baramonsters. The final room of the dungeon is a monster arena, where the heroes fight inside the ring. Once this room is passed, the party will enter a duplicate of Queen Isis' throne room. A monarch calling himself King Zenith sits on the throne.

Treasures
*2 Seeds of strength
*6 Mini medals
*Cower ring
*T'n'T ticket (SNES & GBC only)

A man in the throne room will ask the player 3 riddles, with each one rewarding the player with an incredible item:
*A town in ruins. What glitters beneath the cross?
*A enclosed town in a dark world. It sleeps among flowers...
*The gazer of stars notices not what lies at his feet...

Xenlon the divine dragon
The final boss at the end of the dungeon is Xenlon, the most powerful dragon. She rests at the apex of the citadel among the clouds, and will grant the player one wish from a list of options if they can defeat her within a certain number of turns.
