*Rhapthorne (second form) is a great three-slot Rank X monster. He can be synthesized by combining his first form with Zoma.
Trivia
*Rhapthorne's diminutive first form bears a slight resemblance to real world Sea Angels. Both feature prominent bio-luminescence in their abdomens, stubby appendages, and the Angel's antennae approximate with Rhapthorne's horns.
*When possessing both Dhoulmagus and Leopold, both hosts developed large, black-feathered wings reminiscent of a bird of prey. Neither of Rhapthorne's actually bodies have these traits, with his petite form bearing no wings at all, and his larger form having smaller bat-like wings.
*In Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2, the evil scepter Rhapthorne weilds is called Malevolence.

Lord Rhapthorne is the central antagonist of Dragon Quest VIII. A demon of untold legend, Rhapthorne is the party's final opponent in their quest to rid the world of an evil curse.

Characteristics
Rhapthorne has the upper half of an overweight man with a black goatee. He has two large horns coming from his head. His lower half appears bulbous, with a ring of spikes protruding from the bottom. Rhapthorne's skin is purple, with flame-like designs in a darker shade of purple. He has two small bat wings on his back.

Rhapthorne had power over the World of Darkness and planned to take control of the World of Light, but was stopped by the Seven Sages with the help of Empyrea, the Godbird. He returned centuries later to kill the heirs of Seven Sages and take over the World of Light.

In a break from the series' tradition of the Archfiend being a distant figure removed from much of the narrative, Rhapthorne is actually present from the very beginning of the game thanks to his possession of Dhoulmagus. He is aware of the party's actions against him from the start, and as such his loathing for them is significantly more personal than that of final foes past.
|}}

Nimzo is the source of conflict and final boss of DQ5. As is the case with most of the series' villains, Nimzo is mostly referred to and not actually encountered until the very end of the game, though his pawns and powerful influence do well to wreak havoc throughout the game. He resides in the sinister fortress at Mt. Zugzwang, where Madalena is held captive.

Characteristics
Nimzo initially appears to be an elderly, green-skinned demon. He is capable of performing devastating spells and breath attacks in either form and can also call upon Wrecktors and Killing Machines to assist him while in his initial form. He also possess an ultimate, grotesque form: a bloated, red demon with massive, wrinkled wings, four arms, and a spike-ended tail. It is said that he was once a human long ago, but has since transformed into a monster.

Nimzo's speech in the English DS remake is composed of a font that replaces the English letters used in the rest of the game with Cyrillic letters that resemble them, such as replacing N with И. The overall effect makes Nimzo sound incredibly distinct and alien when compared to other characters and even the narration.

When the player talks to him, he reveals that even Bishop Ladja is not important and his minions were "mere" players in his masterminded evil plan.

Backstory
In the original Super Famicom version, Nimzo was given no back story, though most players assumed he was a demon. In the Nintendo DS and PS2 remakes, 2 monsters, 1 soldier and one book revealed he was in fact a human.

A book in Lofty Peak called The Will Of Our Leader revealed he is a deity born of "lowly disciples" implying he was born of poverty. The book also reveals he soon became the Monarch of Lofty Peak and was wiser than wisdom itself. Unfortunately he took the Secret of Evolution and turned himself into a monster.

The citizens tried, but failed, to take the evil out of him and "Even now, he waits, where no sun shall ever shine, for the Great one to arrive, the one true hero".
Nimzo is immune to Crack, Ice breath, Woosh, and all status ailments when in this form. Additionally, he has a 20% resistance to Frizz, Sizz, Bang, and fire breath. He periodically summons Killing machines and Wrecktors to assist him, and will regenerate 50 HP per round. Though he has no resistance at all to zap, it is better to conserve MP for the second part of the battle.
After assuming this form, Nimzo will cast bounce at the start of battle. He has a tendency cast kasap on the party, but because he attacks physically at infrequent intervals the players can ignore this. Disruptive wave will remove the affects anyway, so it's better to concentrate on maximizing damage instead. His elemental resistances no longer apply, but he is still immune to all debilitation magic. Once 2500 damage has been dealt, he will alter his strategy and begin meditating more often. After another 2000 HP has been removed, Nimzo will cease recovery and focus on the offensive. In this state, his melee blows will become Desperate Attacks, dealing 500% more damage. If the party's healers are running low on MP, he is vulnerable to Drain Magic in this state.

He is considerably weaker in the SNES original version, but it is important to keep in mind that only three characters could be used in that version, (in contrast with the DS and PS2 remakes' four); also, he seems to Meditate much more frequently now.
Nimzo appears as a Legacy Boss. His speech is written normally in this game, presumably because the Cyrillic alphabet is absent from this game's character set. His map can be dropped from Psaro at higher levels (and thus can be obtained multiple times).
DQMJ2
Nimzo is a Rank X monster in this game. One can be synthesized by mixing a Drakulard with Baramos.

Your Story
start
While Nimzo is frequently alluded to in the film, he does not make an actual appearance. Instead, his role is taken by a virus, appearing as a black humanoid figure with a white mask-like face. The presence of the virus results in a twist ending where Luca is shown as a fan of Dragon Quest V playing a virtual reality remake of the game. The virus was injected into the virtual reality game's code to take Nimzo's role, reminding Luca that once he is defeated, it is time to return to the real world. The virus attempts to further break Luca by telling him that everything in the world does not exist and will cease existing once he is defeated. Luca fights back by telling him that even though he knows that he is a player, he grew up playing both the original Super Famicom and PlayStation 2 versions of the game, and that they were his realities that he came to love. Luca's Slime companion Gootrude appears one last time, revealing himself to be an anti-virus program and changing his own code into a sword used to defeat the virus. After the virus is defeated, Luca contemplates that his adventure is almost over, but his allies and enemies will live on in his memories. Despite this different character, the virus is still credited as Nimzo.
end

Etymology
Grandmaster Nimzo is likely derived from Aron Nimzowitsch, a renowned chess writer and (unofficial) grandmaster. Nimzo's underlings are named after chess pieces, and Nimzo himself refers to his overall plan as a game with his underlings being the pawns, so the name was likely given to tie in with these characteristics.

Trivia
*Nizmo is widely regarded as one of the easiest final bosses in the series by fans. Even in remakes, with considerable stat augmentation granted to him, he seems to have more intelligence than raw power and fighting ability.
*Nimzo appears with his current name in Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker, a game that preceded the English release of Dragon Quest V.
The Secret of Evolution (進化の秘法 shinka no hihō) is a key plot element in DQ4. It is said to be integral to the development of all life everywhere, but extremely dangerous if it falls into the wrong hands.
__TOC__

Appearances
DQ4
The Secret of Evolution was originally discovered by Estark, Lord of the Underworld, a thousand years before the game begins. Estark used the Secret of Evolution to transform his body and become the ultimate life-form, and in so doing becomes the most powerful being on the planet. However, although despite his power, he was still able to be sealed away by the efforts of the Zenith Dragon within a tomb deep beneath Mamon.

After this, the secret was lost until it was rediscovered by the alchemist Mahabala, father of Maya and Meena. Unfortunately, his apprentice Balzack murdered him and stole his research, using the imperfect version to empower himself and Marquis de Léon. He passed the secret onto their master, Psaro, the Master of Monsters. Psaro had held off on using it himself for fear of losing his sanity; however, this changed when Aamon had his lover Rose murdered by humans, causing him to fly into a rage and utilize the Secret, taking on a form very similar to that of the transformed Estark.

Unbeknownst to either Psaro or the Chosen Hero, Aamon had expected them to kill each other in Nadiria while he perfected the Secret of Evolution and assumed dominion over all monsterkind. This plan was subverted when the Chosen were able to resurrect Rose using Yggdrasil flowers and restore Psaro from his madness. The Hero, Psaro, and party confronted Aamon in his ultimate form and and destroyed him, eliminating the Secret of Evolution with him.

DQ5
In the Nintendo DS remake of DQ5, it was said that Grandmaster Nimzo was an evil human that took the secret of evolution to become a god, however he end up being sealed up, just like Estark.

The secret of evolution is mentioned by a scholar in Coburg Castle who claims he is studying psarology, the name of the science being derived from the legend of Psaro.

Usage and Effects
The exact steps one must take to perform the Secret are unknown, but it can be assumed that it makes use of magic or is even a form thereof. The technique acts to physically alter a person's physical characteristics, generally making them larger and stronger, and often adding other bonuses as well; for instance, Estark and Psaro both acquire an armoured carapace. This culminated with the final forms of both Psaro and Aamon, who became a bizarre, towering entity with not only a face on the abdomen but a second head with three eyes.

For some reason, the Secret of Evolution requires the Armlet of Transmutation in order to work as intended; if attempted without it, the results are imperfect and often unpredictable. Marquis de Léon, fittingly enough, became a monstrous lioner, while Balzack became a huge and bloated lizardman. Each of these forms has a weapon unique to it - Estark and Psaro use two swords, the Marquis uses bared claws, and Balzack used a club - but whether this is an effect of the transformation or simply a matter of personal preference and common sense is unknown. Since Grandmaster Nimzo took on a form powerful enough in its own right with no mention or indication of him having access to the Armlet of Transmutation, there may be alternate ways of using the Secret of Evolution other than the Armlet and still achieving equally successful results.

One major side effect of using the Secret of Evolution is loss of one's memory. Neither Estark nor Psaro have any recollection of their past after using the Secret other than their own names. This side effect only takes place if the Armlet of Transmutation is utilized to achieve the full potential of the Secret of Evolution, as neither Balzack nor Marquis de Léon experienced memory loss after performing the Secret imperfectly. Interestingly, Aamon still has his memory intact after using the Secret. This may indicate that he knew of a way to bypass the side effect of memory loss, a method that neither Psaro nor Estark were aware of.

In the remake, Rose's tears were able to reverse the effects of the Secret of Evolution on Psaro, perhaps due to her heritage, her own unique magical traits, or her love for him. There may be other circumstances necessary in order to make this reversal possible as well.

Non-Evolutionary Transformations
It seems some demons in the Dragon Quest series such as Mortamor and Orgodemir can naturally transform without need of the Secret of Evolution. In DQ10, the transformation of Nergel was a result of him being exposed to the true darkness at the top of the Heart of Hell.
Cloudsgate Citadel is the name of the bonus dungeon that appears in the 16-bit remake and ports of DQ3. It is a homage to the eponymous flying castle of the Zenithia trilogy, which were the three most recent titles in the series when the SNES remake of III was released in 1996.
Appearances
DQ3
The citadel is reached by stepping into the light of the stained glass windows at the Dragon Queen's palace, although this only occurs if the player has already defeated Zoma and seen the ending, earning the "Erdrick" title on their save file on the loading screen.

The party will find themselves on a small, floating island surrounded by thick clouds. On this island is a deep cave, containing many rooms resembling those seen previously. The floors include:
*The 2nd and 5th floor of Gondo Cave.
*The 1st floor of Orochi's Lair.
*The 2nd floor of the Pyramid (the stairway on the upper righthand area leads to a room modeled after the basement of Tantegel Castle).
*The 2nd floor of the Underground Lake (The healing spring is also present).
*The 1st floor of Gondo Cave.
*The prison room of Manoza Castle.

Many fierce monsters populate this dungeon, including Baramos doppelgangers known as Baramonsters. The final room of the dungeon is a monster arena, where the heroes fight inside the ring. Once this room is passed, the party will enter a duplicate of Queen Isis' throne room. A monarch calling himself King Zenith sits on the throne.

*A town in ruins. What glitters beneath the cross?
*A enclosed town in a dark world. It sleeps among flowers...
*The gazer of stars notices not what lies at his feet...

Xenlon the divine dragon
The final boss at the end of the dungeon is Xenlon, the most powerful dragon. He rests at the apex of the citadel among the clouds, and will grant the player one wish from a list of options if they can defeat him within a certain number of turns.
