is the eighth installment in the Dragon Quest series, developed by Level-5 and published by Square Enix for the PlayStation 2 video game console. It was also later released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2015.

Gameplay
New Features
* The game uses a over-the-shoulder 3-D display on all maps, replacing the traditional bird's-eye view. It can optionally be switched to a first-person view. Only the lead character is displayed in the map view, however. The lead character may be swapped though.
* There is an automap feature in dungeons, and complete maps of all towns. The locations and contents of chests are marked on the map. Also, it is possible to browse the inventory of the shops while looking at the town map.
* Characters are shown holding their equipped weapons, in an appropriate posture. In a few cases, the character's displayed clothing will change to reflect their other equipment, although it usually stays the same.
* The buildings in a town are visible even from the overworld view.
* Random encounters are suppressed as long as the party is on a road.
* Chests and special encounters with tameable monsters can be found in the overworld.
* The day-night cycle of games III, IV, and V is restored. Time now passes even in towns, and the party can use an inn to switch from day to night, as well as vice-versa. Thus, there is no longer a Darkness Lamp, or related spells.
* Party conversations return from the previous instalment, but it is now possible to either select which party member to talk to, or cycle through them in order.
* The battle screens are shown as a 3-D view, with shifting camera angles to display the current combatant. The party appears in the battle screen, unlike previous instalments. At the end of the battle, an animation of the surviving party members putting away their weapons is played.

Tension system
There is a new Dragon Ball-inspired tension system, allowing combatants to spend a turn building up "tension," which will increase the power level of their next attack or spell. Tension can be built up repeatedly, increasing attack power still further. There is a new party AI option to focus on using high-tension attacks, replacing the old "Leave it to me" option. Tension can be used to overcome a monster's resistance to physical or elemental attacks.

Attempting to reach the fourth, "super-high tension" state has a chance of failure, depending on the character's level. Also, some monsters are able to instantly reach the third stage of tension, and will then repeatedly attempt to reach the super-high level.

Skill system
Each character has five skill values that can increase during the course of the game; three are associated with the character's three favored weapon types, one with unarmed combat, and one with the character's special ability. Skill points awarded on level-up, or when using a skill seed, can be distributed among the five skills by the player. Increasing a skill beyond certain fixed levels grants additional powers and bonuses to statistics when the player is using an appropriate type of weapon.

Alchemy
At a certain point in the game, the party receives an Alchemy Pot. This device can be used to combine two items into a third (usually more powerful) item following various recipes. The combination takes a certain amount of time, depending on the power of the combined item and the level of the pot. This "time" only advances as the wagon moves, on the overworld. Later in the game, the pot is upgraded to hold three items, allowing additional, even more powerful recipes.

An invalid recipe will be rejected immediately without consuming the items, allowing the player to experiment to find new recipes. In the Bonus Dungeon, the player gains a pot that can mix items instantly.

New recipes (or clues to new recipes) are revealed in various books and scraps of paper found throughout the game. All recipes the player has discovered are listed in a "recipe book" accessed through the alchemy menu; recipes which are only partially known (from a clue) will have some item names replaced with "????."

Vehicles
Vehicles are shown at their actual size, and the world map is scaled down appropriately when they are in use.

The ship has a bridge which it uses to dock with the land, and its altitude can be changed to match the shorter cliffs, if necessary.

The other available vehicles are a Sabrecat steed (summoned with a magic bell), which moves much faster than the hero, allowing the party to move further between random encounters (although they still occur at the same rate), and a stone, which allows the party to turn into birds.

Although the party has a wagon throughout the game, it has no effect on gameplay, since the party is essentially fixed throughout the game. Also, it is not normally shown on the display, only appearing during cutscenes or the Party Chat screen.

The player can also use the Godbird Soulstone, which can be obtained later, enabling flight.

Characters
Playable Characters
*Hero - The hero is a royal guard of Trodain, who journeys with King Trode to hunt down Dhoulmagus and make him pay for his crimes. His pet mouse, Munchie, usually rides in his right coat pocket.

*Yangus - Yangus is a former bandit who journeys with the Hero and King Trode. Like the hero, he is a party member from the start of the game.

*Jessica - A voluptuous, short-tempered, and tomboyish sorceress born to a wealthy family in the town of Alexandria, and the third party member. She seeks to avenge her brother Alistair, who is slain by Dhoulmagus.

*Angelo - Angelo is one of Maella Abbey's Templar Knights and the fourth party member. Though unable to live with the strict moral code of the Templars, with his lust for gambling and women, he is faithfully devoted to Abbot Francisco.

Other Characters
*King Trode - King Trode is the King of Trodain, and the titular character of Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King. He was transformed into a toad-like creature by the evil wizard Dhoulmagus, and is trying to find a way to lift the curse upon him. During parts of the game, if you press the Select button, King Trode will give you helpful advice.

*Princess Medea - Medea is the daughter of King Trode. She was turned into a horse when her father was cursed by Dhoulmagus. She travels with the heroes by pulling the cart with their supplies. She and the Hero are close childhood friends.

*Marcello - Marcello is the captain of the Templar Knights who guard the Abbot with their lives. However, Marcello wants more power than was offered, and after he takes over following the Abbot's death, he becomes a partner to High Priest Rolo. With this opening, the resulting events that Marcello causes will set the stage for the fate of the world to be decided.

*Sir Leopold - He is the spoiled dog of the great magician Dominico. Leopold is let out of his cage by the mistake of a servant, and after the previous wielder of the Sceptre drops it, Leopold picks it up and is taken over by Rhapthorne.

*Dhoulmagus - Dhoulmagus is a jester who, in order to get revenge on those who insulted him, stole a magical sceptre from Trodain Castle. However, when he attempted to unleash its power, it overwhelmed him, and allowed Rhapthorne to take over his body.

*Lord Rhapthorne - Lord Rhapthorne is the main antagonist who is heard, but isn't seen until the end of the game. His spirit was trapped in the Trodain sceptre that Dhoulmagus possessed in the beginning of the game. Lord Rhapthorne took control of whoever possessed the sceptre which was first Dhoulmagus, then Jessica, then a fearsome pet dog named Sir Leopold until he killed each heir of the seven sages to release his energy and give himself his own body

Plot
start
Hunting for Dhoulmagus
Dragon Quest VIII begins when the evil jester Dhoulmagus steals a magical sceptre from Trodain Castle. With this powerful sceptre, he transforms the inhabitants of Trodain into plant-like statues, as well as changing the king into a toad-like monster and the princess into a horse, while covering the majority of the castle in large, green magical thorns. The Hero, a young Trodain guardsman, is the only resident to remain uncursed. Accompanying the cursed king and princess, he hunts Dhoulmagus, in hopes of restoring Trodain to its former glory. The Hero is eventually joined on his quest by three companions: a scarred, inarticulate bandit named Yangus, a wand-waving tomboy named Jessica, and Angelo, a rapier-wielding Templar Knight and self-proclaimed ladies' man. During their travels, the party runs into Dhoulmagus several times. A couple of these encounters involve Dhoulmagus killing someone beloved by members of the Hero's party. Individuals slain by Dhoulmagus include Alistair (Jessica's brother) and Abbot Francisco, who is head of the abbey where Angelo lives. The party finally tracks down Dhoulmagus to the Dark Ruins, where they find him recuperating, and finally face off against him. After his defeat, he tries to curse the party with his sceptre, but the hero is again unaffected by the curse, blocking the blast and sparing the other party members. Dhoulmagus then uses his menacing power to change into a hideous creature. However, even with his new powers, he is no match for the might of the heroes. Much to their surprise, however, they find that even with his defeat, the curse still has not been lifted. Concluding that something else must be maintaining the curse, they leave the ruins, with Jessica picking up Dhoulmagus' sceptre as they exit.

The Next Owners of the Staff
The next morning, the Hero and the others find to their surprise that Jessica is missing. While searching for her, the party enters a town called Arcadia, arriving just in time to save a magician named Dominico from an apparently-possessed Jessica wielding the Sceptre. After chastising David, his young servant, Dominico sends the heroes to find the Kran Spinels to aid in warding off Jessica. Once the heroes return with the jewels, Dominico uses them to create a more effective barrier against Jessica. While he prepares the incantation to erect the barrier, the party engages Jessica outside in an attempt to stall her, discovering in the process that her true objective is David, an heir of one of the seven great sages. After the battle, Dominico's barrier is able to release Jessica from her possession.

After recovery, Jessica reveals what her possessor had planned, as well as giving it a name -- Rhapthorne, The Lord of Darkness. His soul had previously been imprisoned inside the Sceptre by the seven sages, and he plots to remove the seals by killing their heirs as soon as possible. At that point, the party realizes the Sceptre is missing. They rush over to Dominico's estate, only to see that Rhapthorne has succeeded in mortally wounding David after taking control of Dominico's dog Sir Leopold as his next host. After Rhapthorne flees, David utteres his final words, as a repentant and grieving Dominico laments over him. With only two heirs left to kill, the possessed Sir Leopold absconds to the snowy mountain valley of the north. An old woman named Marta, who happens to be the one of the two remaining heirs, lives in the wintry countryside.

After running an errand for Marta and finding her son Marek, the party comes back to Marta's house only to see it set ablaze by Sir Leopold. Holding her son Marek hostage, Sir Leopold forces Marta to come out and face him. He manages to kill her, and flies away to find the last living heir. Enlisting the aid of the legendary godbird Empyrea, the party tracks Sir Leopold down to the Lord High Priest's mansion and engage him. After putting down the possessed Sir Leopold, he loses his grip on the Sceptre, and dies. The Lord High Priest goes into shock, and faints. Meanwhile, Marcello (the new abbot, and Angelo's half-brother) enters, and frames the party for attempting to assassinate the Lord High Priest, and has them exiled to Purgatory Island. Marcello picks up the Sceptre, but manages to resist Lord Rhapthorne's evil influence. He assumes his position of the Lord High Priest thereafter.

Imprisoned
The party manages to escape from Purgatory Island, returning to face Marcello on the holy isle of Neos, and defeats him. In his weakened state, Marcello gives in to Rhapthorne's influence. With all seven sages killed, Rhapthorne is resurrected in flesh and blood. He transforms Neos into the Black Citadel, and raises it into the sky to stage his attack upon the world. The heroes battle their way through the Citadel and defeat Rhapthorne in his first body. However, by doing so, Rhapthorne is able to unleash his full power and incorporate the Black Citadel into himself, transforming himself into a massive devil looming over the land. Empyrea calls upon the heroes to destroy Rhapthorne once and for all. The Sceptre of Trodain, imbued with Empyrea's essence, is now an essential weapon for the party, able to unlock the power of the seven orbs containing the spirits of the seven sages, to penetrate into Rhapthorne's mighty barrier and engage him in mortal combat. After finally ending the reign of Rhapthorne, the party restored peace to the world. King Trode and Princess Medea are changed back to their human forms, and the curse of Trodain, along with its thorns, is lifted and removed.

The Princess's Wedding
Seven months later, the Hero is assigned to escort Princess Medea to her arranged wedding with Prince Charmles of Argonia. After reuniting with his three friends, the hero sets sail for Savella Cathedral with the king and princess. Prince Charmles meets with the entourage personally, and forbids the party from attending the ceremony within the cathedral. On the day of the wedding, the Hero manages to slip into the cathedral with Yangus' help. However, the Princess is nowhere to be found. The Hero escapes, and finds the Princess at the cathedral courtyard waiting for him. They return to Trodain in a carriage steered by King Trode, and live happily ever after.

Alternate Ending
An "alternate ending" can be achieved once the first ending has been viewed, which unlocks the Dragovian Realm. A well-experienced party of heroes can challenge the Lord of the Dragovians at the Heavenly Dais. If successful, the hero's true origins are revealed, and the alternate ending will replace the first ending, where the player defeats Rhapthorne again. In the alternate ending, the Hero is revealed as the son of the lost prince of Argonia. His mother was a Dragovian maiden who escaped to the human world and met Clavius' older brother, but her father did not agree to the relationship and took her home. Following after, the Prince died just short of the Dragovian homeland. The hero was born shortly afterwards, but sentenced to exile in the human world, as his birth took the life of his mother. Ashamed for his actions, the maiden's father went with his only surviving kin, as the mouse Munchie. Upon defeating the Dragovian lord, who had become mad after trying to abandon his human form, gives the Hero his father's ring. Clavius, King of Argonia and Prince Charmles' father, acknowledges the hero's right to marry the Princess after seeing the ring, which allows him to finally feel at peace with his lost brother. The two are wed at Savella Cathedral, much to the scorn of Charmles, who is finally confronted by his father over his initiation test earlier in the story. The newlywed couple come out of the cathedral together and embrace each other, much to the surprise of the other party members. They return to Trodain in the same fashion as the first ending, and live happily ever after.
end

Development
Like the other games in the series, Dragon Quest VIIIs designers include Yuji Horii as scenario director, Akira Toriyama as the art designer, and Koichi Sugiyama as the music composer.

Unlike the original Japanese version, the North American and European localizations of the game mark a departure from previous Dragon Quest titles, due to the inclusion of voice acting in certain parts of the adventure pertaining to the advancement of the storyline. The game nevertheless retains the series' tradition of allowing the player to name the lead character, reconciling the two by having the voice acting script skip all incidences of the hero's name (e.g., the line, "Okay, [Hero], my boy..." appears onscreen, while the voice acting says, "Okay, my boy..."), and occasionally replacing the name with Yangus' nickname for the hero, "guv'" (as in "governor," pronounced with a Cockney accent) In addition, small changes, such as the removal of the traditional 8-bit sound effects that accompany attacks, and magic abilities, were made. Despite other games in the series being edited during localization for North America, Dragon Quest VIII has no editing in it. The English translation is credited to Plus Alpha Translations and AltJapan.

Several characters from previous Dragon Quest games make a cameo appearance, among which are the Fighter and Warrior from Dragon Quest III; Ragnar, Healie, and Torneko (here called Torneko Taloon, a combination of the names by which he's known in Japan and America) from Dragon Quest IV; and the legendary bird Ramia from Dragon Quest III. There is even an allusion to the Dracolord (Dragonlord) from Dragon Quest I present during the course of the game.

Localization
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King was released in North America on November 15, 2005, and shipped with a playable Final Fantasy XII demo disc. Additions and changes to the North American version of Dragon Quest VIII include: voice acting, new animations, enhanced music and sound effects, additional spells and attacks, and a new menu interface. It was also the first game in the Dragon Quest series to bear the original, Japanese "Dragon Quest" name (rather than "Dragon Warrior") in North America. Dragon Quests North American name was changed, due to a trademark conflict with the role-playing game DragonQuest, which was published by wargame publisher Simulations Publications in the 1980s until the company's bankruptcy in 1982 and purchase by TSR, Inc., which then published it as an alternate pen-and-paper RPG line to Dungeons & Dragons until 1987.

In 2003, Square Enix registered the Dragon Quest trademark in the US, making the "Dragon Warrior" name obsolete. Thus, this instalment of the series was the first after 2003 to be released outside of Japan and to receive the word "Quest" in its title.

A demo disc for Dragon Quest VIII was released in America during the fall of 2005 through certain venues, including Shonen Jump magazine. Dragon Quest VIII is also the first flagship Dragon Quest game to be released in Europe. It was released in Europe on April 13, 2006, under the title Dragon Quest: The Journey of the Cursed King, dropping the sequel number. Unlike the North American version, the European version does not contain a Final Fantasy XII demo.
Marcello is a man with imposing physical features, possessing green eyes, an aquiline nose, and a stern demeanor. His features are similar to his half-brother's, but are much colder and harsher. His shoulder-length black hair is slicked back and he has a widow's peak, along with long, but neatly trimmed sideburns. Marcello wears the uniform of a Templar captain. This consists of a blue long-sleeved tailcoat with red inner lining, white trim, gold stitching on the front, and long square tails that reach down to his ankles, as well a blue capelet with red inner lining and white trim that covers his shoulders and upper arms.
After his ascension to Lord High Priest, Marcello's outfit changes slightly, becoming more ornate as befits his new station. He has added a tippet around his neck, a type of long ceremonial scarf worn by clergy, which is red and is adorned with gold lining and various magical runes. His tailcoat and capelet now have gold lining, and his capelet has a border around the bottom inscribed with runes like his tippet.

Story
Past
Marcello was the son of a wealthy, but cruel man and one of his maids. His father found that his wife would not bear a child and so had Marcello with his maid. While Marcello was still a boy, his father did manage to have a son with his wife, naming him Angelo. Marcello and his mother were thrown out of the house with nowhere to go and nothing to their names.

Not much later his mother died, leaving him alone. Fortunately for Marcello, a leader of a group of monks at Maella Abbey, Abbot Francisco, took him in and offered for him to be a Templar Knight, his own guard. Marcello studied and trained hard for years at the Abbey and became the top young student. He later learned that his father and his household had died of a plague, all except Angelo. A few days later as Marcello was walking through the Abbey, he met a small boy who had just arrived. He talked kindly to the boy until he learned the boy's name. Angelo. Marcello, angered that the boy who had caused him to be thrown out of his home had been welcomed into the Abbey, walked away angrily as the Abbot appeared.

Marcello only grew to hate Angelo more as his half-brother took no care in his studies as he grew and only began to become a gambler and ladies' man, sneaking to the nearby town of Simpleton whenever he pleased. His hatred for Angelo only increased his bitterness and several sinister ambitions from deep down within him. Despite this, Marcello still became the Captain of the Templars and was still under the watchful eye of Abbot Francisco.

The Jester, the Travellers, and the Monster
Marcello spent a few years as the Templar Captain watching Angelo and being under the watch of Abbot Francisco. The abbey is soon visited by a jester, Dhoulmagus with an eerie aura. The jester did stay for long, leaving before night had even come. After this visit, Marcello tightened the guard so strangers would have limited access to the Abbey. A few days later, a group of travellers came to the Abbey. An ex-bandit named Yangus, a aristocrat girl named Jessica, and the Hero. Two Templars guarding the door that led to to the sleeping quarters threaten them to leave when Marcello intervenes from a large window just above them. He reprimanded the guards for being rude and sullying the reputation of the Templars.

The guards kneel and apologize to Marcello. Marcello, in turn, apologizes for his guards' behavior saying they have had a problem with strangers as of late, but also saying that that was none of their matters. He asked them to leave and warned them that his men were ill at ease and might not be able to stop them again. The party then left and headed to Simpleton, meeting Angelo while they were there.

When Angelo returns from Simpleton, having gotten into a bar fight for cheating at poker, Marcello took him down to the Interrogation Room to lecture him. Marcello asked him how much more shame he intended to bring to the Abbey and saying he was like a curse, and that if he hadn't been born it would have spared everyone a lot of misery. After he was done insulting him, Marcello sentenced him to a term of penitence stripping him of his right to leave the Abbey, and threatened to expel him from the Order if he crossed him again. Ending the conversation, Marcello sent him back to the quarters.

Meanwhile, the party of travellers had heard the whole conversation and were later asked by Angelo to take a secret passage through the Ruined Abbey to check if the Abbot was alright. Angelo stated that he felt a sinister presence in the air. So the party did and came up under a trapdoor gravestone behind the Abbot's residence. They enter the building to see many unconscious guards and go to the Abbot's room where he is sleeping. Dhoulmagus was there, but he disappeared when he saw them.

Marcello and the Templars arrive to encounter the party and a confused Abbot. Marcello knelt next to the Abbot's bed as Francisco asked him what was going on. Marcello told him that there had been a breech of security and that some of the guards had been seriously wounded. Marcello said that he had come immediately fearing that he was in trouble, and caught the party. The Abbot protested stating that they were no criminals. Marcello argued that they were caught red-handed, but Francisco simply told him to look into their eyes and see that that were guilty of nothing. Marcello finally consented, but said that they must find out what they were lurking in his residence for so late at night. the Abbot told Marcello that he could question them, and Marcello thanked him.

Marcello was still not convinced, however, that they were not the attackers. He took them down to the Interrogation Room, which was connected to the Torture Room. In the room, the party insisted they had done nothing wrong, telling him that Angelo had told them to check up on the Abbot. Marcello told them that he was not as forgiving as the Abbot and would let them off the hook without any evidence. Angelo then entered the room, being called upon by Marcello. Marcello asked him if he had permitted them inside the Abbey, presenting Angelo's ring which he had found with the party. Unexpectedly, Angelo chuckled, taking the ring and stating, relieved, that it had finally turned up. He told Marcello that someone had stolen it from him at the pub, and that they were finally going to learn that crime doesn't pay. Angelo then left, saying that he could be found in his chambers. Marcello tried to stop him, but Angelo didn't listen. Marcello, saying that he would deal with him later, turned his attention back to the party.

Angered that so much of his time had been wasted, Marcello told the party to confess. Once again they claimed they didn't do anything. Then another Templar appeared, with a little green monster in his possession, King Trode. The monster then turned to the party calling their names and asking them what they were doing there. Marcello laughed, picking up Trode by the cloak, and berated the party for being friends with a monster. He presented his theory that the monster had ordered them to kill the Abbot so people would question their faith and send them into a confusion. Then they would move in and take control.

He then ordered the Templars to take them into a cell, so that he could torture them in the morning.

The Funeral
However, with the help of Angelo, the party escaped and left the Abbey through a secret passageway in the Torture Room. That was least of Marcello's worries, as the jester returned, wreaking even more havoc then he had before. Dhoulmagus forced his way to the Abbot's residence pursued by Marcello and the Templars. The jester set fire to the bridge leading to the Abbot's residence slowing down the pursuit, but Marcello and a few more Templars got through in time. Meanwhile, Angelo and the party saw the bridge burning from nearby and rushed to the Abbey to help. They crossed the bridge just before it collapsed.

Up in the Abbot's chambers, Marcello, his Templars already down, stood between Dhoulmagus and the Abbot. He was no match for Dhoulmagus and was thrown against the wall with a wave of the sceptre the jester wielded. Angelo arrived by Marcello's side as the Templar Captain gritted his teeth in pain. Marcello ordered Angelo to get the Abbot to safety, just as Dhoulmagus waved his sceptre again, throwing the two across the room. The Abbot qualmed Marcello's worries saying he has given himself to the Goddess, and his life was in her hands. Dhoulmagus drifted closer to Francisco preparing to kill him when suddenly Trode burst into the room. Dhoulmagus stopped and mock-bowed to Trode, making fun of him. Trode demanded him to turn him and his daughter, Medea, to normal. Dhoulmagus simply rose the sceptre and threw it at Trode. Trode was saved however as Abbot Francisco dove in the way being stabbed clean through by the sceptre. Dhoulmagus levitated the sceptre back to his hand as Abbot Francisco collapsed. Dhoulmagus mocked them once more then retreated, flying through the window, his laugh echoing as he disappeared.

The Abbot's funeral was held the same night, the rain making everything even more gloomy. Marcello, who had managed to escape injury except for a slightly bandaged head, explained to everyone what had happened the night before, and cleared the party of any suspicion. And thus, Marcello became the new Abbot.

Openings
In the morning, Marcello summoned Angelo, Trode, and the party to his quarters. Marcello apologized to the party for doubting their innocence, King Trode having explained the entire situation they were in. Dhoulmagus stealing the sceptre, cursing the king and princess, and turning Trodain into ruins. Since he could not leave the Abbey himself, being the new Abbot and being very busy, Marcello asked the party if they would allow Angelo to aid them on their quest. Marcello told Angelo that he was the only Templar who did not have any duties to fulfill being the only one with an open schedule. Angelo claimed that there was no need to beat around the bush that he was simply useless. Angelo and the party still agreed, however, and Marcello gave them a map of the world considering it a peace offering, and wished them well on their journey.

Marcello assumes control after the Lord High Priest falls during an attack by the Rhapthorne possessed dog, and eventually destroys the Holy Shrine at Neos after previously maintaining control of the sceptre. However, he loses control after a battle with the party, allowing Rhapthorne to complete his resurrection and destroying the isle. He is found by Angelo grasping to the side of a precipice above the deep crater from which Rhapthorne has just risen. Resigned to die, Angelo saves Marcello nonetheless. In so doing, he says, "No, I won't let you die. You will go on living, knowing that the brother you despised your whole life took pity on you."

Marcello (マルチェロ, Maruchero) is the half-brother of Angelo and a major antagonist in Dragon Quest VIII. In the English versions, he is voiced by Josh Cohen.

Appearance
He also wears blue trousers tucked into tall leather boots that go over his knee, black leather gloves, and a gold ring worn around a chain on his neck. Around his waist is a leather sword-belt, holding a red scabbard where he keeps his rapier on his left side.

Marcello (マルチェロ, Maruchero) is the half-brother of Angelo and a major antagonist in Dragon Quest VIII. In the English versions, he is voiced by Josh Cohen.

Appearance
He also wears blue trousers tucked into tall leather boots that go over his knee, black leather gloves, and a gold ring worn around a chain on his neck. Around his waist is a leather sword-belt, holding a red scabbard where he keeps his rapier on his left side.

He also wears blue trousers tucked into tall leather boots that go over his knee, black leather gloves, and a gold ring worn around a chain on his neck. Around his waist is a leather sword-belt, holding a red scabbard where he keeps his rapier on his left side.

|Age=20
|}}
The Hero of Dragon Quest VIII is a 20 year-old low-ranking royal guardsmen in Trodain Castle, before becoming a refuge of the kingdom in the prologue of Dragon Quest VIII. He was one of the small band who survived Dhoulmagus' deadly attack, along with Trode, Medea and Munchie. As is the series' tradition, the Hero is a silent protagonist whom the player is meant to project themselves upon, using him as an avatar to explore and interact with the game's world.

The Hero is a versatile character, as equally proficient in armed combat as he is in using healing spells and support magic. His preferred weapons are swords, spears and boomerangs.

Appearance and Personality
Due to his aforementioned status as a silent protagonist, very little can be said of the man's character that isn't decided by the player. That being said, the youth has demonstrated a remarkably humane nature in certain cutscenes. This is most apparent in the flashback to his meeting with Yangus, who accidentally broke the rope bridge that he was blocking while attempting to extort money from king Trode. Instead of letting the bellicose bandit fall to his death, the former guard pulled him to safety despite Trode's considerable umbrage.

In contrast to heroes of previous games, this Hero dresses very casually and historically coherent, wearing a saffron overcoat with a blue tunic, simple red bandana, and plain grey trousers with brown boots.

Background
startHe is the son of Eltrio and Xia, making him half-human and half-Dragovian. This union came about when the later became curious of the human world, and decided to explore it. After encountering Eltrio, Xia fell in love with the young man and spent much time with him. Unfortunately, her father Chen Mui did not approve of the joining of human and dragovian, feeling that the two races could never develop true love between them, and forced his daughter back to the dragovian sanctuary. Some time after this, the body of Eltrio was found near the sanctuary's outskirts, having braved the immense dangers alone to reach his beloved. The death of her loved devastated Xia, and day by day her very life force began to fade. Before joining Eltrio in the afterlife, however, Xia delivered their child in the sanctuary. The boy would live among the dragovians for several years as the council of elders debated what to do with the anomaly, until one day it was decided that his memories would be sealed, and that he would be banished from his people. His grandfather, realizing the youth was his last connection to his daughter, begged for permission to accompany his grandson. It was decided that he could do so, but only if he took the form of a innocuous mouse, and never spoke a word to him.

As the son of Eltrio, the Hero is also the nephew of King Clavius of Argonia. This blood connection is what enables him to superseded Prince Charmles in the right to marry the heir to Trodain. By the end of the game, he has become captain of the guard and the son-in-law of King Trode after marrying Princess Medea.end

An amnesiac since his early youth, the Hero grew up in Trodain castle, eventually serving as a guard for some time before the events of the prologue took place. For much of Dragon Quest VIII, the hero journeys with his faithful mouse friend, Munchie, King Trode, Medea, and Yangus. The hero is eventually joined by Jessica and Angelo, enlisting their aid in pursuing and confronting the wicked Dhoulmagus.

Munchie
The Hero carries around his pet, Munchie, wherever he goes. A highly intelligent Pig-Rat, Munchie is capable of entering small spaces and exploring areas the party would otherwise have no access to. If you give Munchie cheese items, he gains special abilities. Munchie rides in the pocket of the Hero's coat most of the time. Munchie will show his true significance only after the game.
Skill Tips
Swords pay off if you are in pursuit of metal monsters, with Metal Slash (30 points) being particularly useful. If you accumulate 100 points in swords and courage you learn the almighty gigagash, although this takes quite some time to achieve.

Spears are ideal for hunters of metal monsters in particular, with Thunder Thrust (12 points) and Lightning Thrust (59 points). The Multithrust (25 points) is also worth a try against single enemies.

Boomerangs are a real boon in the beginning of the game because they attack all enemies. Later, however, this skill becomes less useful (over 40 points: Attack + 15), so it is advisable to switch to developing different skills.

Fisticuffs is largely ineffectual to the other skills, although some actions are worth a try like Thin Air (42 points). The Hero can only make a real impression when he learns Attack + 50 (100 points).

Courage is extremely useful as a means of learning traits that reduce MP consumption (at 56 and 90 points). Don't ignore the advanced attacks either (Zap, 48 points and Kazap at 100 points), or the Omniheal spell at 82 points.

Suggested Strategies: Learn Courage up to 8 points (Zoom) initially, then learn Boomerangs up to 40 points (Attack + 15) followed by courage up to 100. Next, increase your Swords skill to 66 (Attack + 25) or Spears up to 59 (Critical Hit).

Another option would be to forgo Boomerangs altogether and start by dividing points equally between Swords and Courage (up to Swords 66), then switching to Spears and Courage.

However, since you come across some extremely effective spears in the opening stages of the game, you may prefer to concentrate on mastering spears from the outset.

Trivia
* When the hero's tension is maxed, his appearance changes drastically. His bandana flies off and his hair spikes up, making him resemble Super Saiyan Son Goku of Dragon Ball Z fame. This little feature was added to the American release of the game, as a shoutout to fans of Toriyama's work.
