'''Torneko Taloon''' (トルネコ) is a character in ''[[Dragon Quest IV]]'', ''[[Torneko: The Last Hope]]'' and ''[[Dragon Quest VIII]]''.

==Appearance and Personality==
Taloon wears a loose muumuu, chosen for comfort and practicality over fashionability. He hefts a giant backpack of sorts at all times, which he uses to hold his wares, personal belongings and, presumably, some of the party's items. He has a mustache and huge belly, both of which help to bring out his general jolliness. He has blue hair and a blue mustache.

He is initially compelled to leave his quiet home due to an unquenchable wanderlust; his wife is very understanding and promises to look after their home and child while Taloon runs off in search of wealth and adventure.

Although much of his time and effort goes toward accruing [[gold coin]]s, he doesn't do this out of greed, but to make his wife happy and for altruistic endeavors. Overall, he is a very kind person.

==Story==
Torneko wakes up in Chapter 3 in his house in [[Lakanaba]] to work his job at the local weapons shop while supporting his wife [[Tessie]] and his son Tippy. However, he feels that this life is not good enough for him so he sets on a journey to fulfill his dream which is to own a shop. He then hears about the [[Steel Strongbox]] that allows him to travel anywhere without worrying about dying because it keeps all of the [[Gold_coin|Gold]] when he dies instead of taking half of it.

Torneko ends up getting the strongbox in a cave up north and heads south to [[Ballymoral]] where he comes across Old Man Finnegan's son Finn whom is in prison and asks him for a [[chimaera wing]] to return home to Lakanaba, which Torneko does. While at the castle, he learns of Archie O'tect who was suppose to repair the bridge between Ballymoral & [[Endor]], and that he hasn't arrived. He manages to find the architect in the north in what appeared to be a town called [[Reginhart]].

Hearing of some foxes in the area, however, Torneko returns to Lakanaba to request the use of Finn's dog [[Fido]] to seek out a fox, which proves to be successful. As a result, Archie resumes his duty to repair the bridge. Thus, Torneko heads to Endor, but not before receiving a [[Prince's Letter|letter]] from Prince [[Regan]] to giving to Princess [[Veronica]] in the other castle.

Torneko made it to the castle and meets an old man who wants to sell his shop to someone with permission from King Norman. The King states that he will consider the merchant's request. While in the throne room, he reads the letter to The Princess detailing that King Shamus of Ballymoral is seeking to conquer Endor, prompting Endor's King to give him the [[Royal Scroll]] (which is a request for the children of both castles to marry, and thus avoiding the need to go to war).

Torneko delivers the Scroll to King Shamus, who agrees to dismiss his plans. Soon after, King Norman allows the merchant to open [[Torneko's shop|a shop]], which he does and calling his family over to their new home.

Afterwards, Torneko's attention is turned toward an old man who wanted to continue developing the [[Trans-Montane Tunnel]] which will lead from Endor to the country of [[Casabranca]]. He needed 60,000 gold coins to achieve this, which Torneko helped out with (through making money at his shop, as well as providing a set of [[Steel broadsword]]s and [[Iron armour]]s to Endor's warriors).

Once the tunnel is completed, Torneko traveled through on behalf of the old man and accepts the task of carrying on his dream by traveling the world by [[ship]] and gathering many legendary treasures.

He managed to cross the desert at [[Last Chance Saloon]] through the aid of a caravan,<ref>Mentioned by the treasure room guard at Casabranca during the day.</ref> and passed through [[Bath]]<ref>mentioned by a residence at night in a house.</ref>.

Torneko made it to [[Porthtrunnel]] & paid to have a ship made, while hearing of an [[Conrad Hilton|old man]] in [[Mintos]] who has a [[Treasure map (Dragon Quest IV)|treasure map]]. He left upon hearing of monsters who corrupted the lighthouse fire at [[Pharos Beacon]] to restore peace to the oceans. Upon finding the monsters to be too strong, he made a plea to [[Hero (Dragon Quest IV)|The Hero]] and company to find the [[Holy Embers]] and to defeat the ones causing problems to the lighthouse. They agree to do so, and are joined by Torneko shortly after who provides use of his ship for travels.

Upon defeating [[Psaro the Manslayer]] ([[Aamon]] in the remakes), the party returns to their lives with Torneko returning to his family in Endor, and later showing up with the group in [[Hidden Valley]] to see The Hero.

==In Battle==
In the ''[[Dragon Quest III]]'' class system, Taloon has elements of both a [[merchant]] and a [[goof-off]]. As a merchant, he can protect the party's gold when they go down, and use his [[appraise]] ability to give basic information and loss/return estimates on items in the party's possession. However, he also has the goof-off's tendency to not follow orders in battle, bellowing loudly, staring blankly into space, or telling naff gags when ordered to attack. He can equip most weapons and armour, and has respectable HP and level growth, and is otherwise a decent fighter; however, his Defence leaves something to be desired.
==Names==
In the [[DS]] remake of ''Dragon Quest IV'', Taloon's given name is Torneko, his Japanese name. In fact, his last name is Taloon, similar to how [[Ryan]] became "Ragnar McRyan."

==Appearances in Other Dragon Quest Games==
===[[Dragon Quest VI]]===
Torneko appears at the [[inn]] of [[Reaper's Peak]] and is surprised by there being a town within the [[Fungeon (Dragon Quest VI)|Fungeon]]. He is impressed by the fact that [[Hero (Dragon Quest VI)|The Hero]] explored it.

===Dragon Quest VIII===
In [[Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King]], in the [[Monster Arena]] Rank S series of fights, the first fight is fought against a character that is named, and bares a striking resemblance to Torneko Taloon. The announcer reinforces this by saying the character is from [[Lakanaba]]. He uses treasure based monsters; two [[Goodybag]] monsters and a [[Mimic king]].

===Dragon Quest IX===
On December 10, 2010 Torneko began appearing as a special guest at the [[Quester's Rest]] in [[Stornway]].

==Non-''Dragon Quest'' Appearances==
===''[[Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy in Itadaki Street Special]]''===
Along with [[Ryan]], [[Cristo]], and [[Alena]], Taloon appears as a playable characters in ''Itadaki Street Special''.

===Mystery Dungeon Series===
Taloon has appeared as the main character in three of the ''[[Mystery Dungeon]]'' games, usually with his wife and son as secondary characters: ''[[Torneko no Daibouken: Fushigi no Dungeon]]'', ''[[Torneko: The Last Hope]]'', and ''[[Dragon Quest Characters: Torneko no Daibōken 3]]''. He also appeared in ''[[Dragon Quest: Shōnen Yangus to Fushigi no Dungeon|Dragon Quest: Young Yangus and the Mysterious Dungeon]]'', although in a supporting role.

==Appearance and Personality==
Kiryl wears the traditional hat of a [[priest]] character.

He is very loyal to Tsarevna [[Alena]], as evidenced by how he immediately rushes after her when she escapes. It is also noted that he has a crush on the princess as well.

In the remake version of the game, it is revealed that he is scared heights if you use the party chat in certain areas.

==Story==
Chapter 2 begins with Alena begging her father, the Tsar of Zamoksva, to let her explore the world, since strong fighters are needed more and more in their troubled times, with the Underworld creeping out of dormancy. However, he refuses, saying that with monsters showing increasing aggression, it's simply too dangerous to let her leave the safety of the castle. Alena goes back to her room but, within a few minutes, has been overcome with frustration and escapes the castle.

Kiryl and [[Borya]], her retainers, give chase; they're resigned to not being able to make her stay put, but if she's going to leave, they can't allow her to travel alone. The three set out and soon come to a small village being terrorized by a local monster continually demanding young girls as a sacrifice. Alena immediately heads to the local church to offer herself as the next sacrifice, but she has no intention of dying; as soon as the demon shows its face, she, Kiryl and Broya spring into action and take it out, saving the village.

Alena and her companions are not seen again until Chapter 5, when Kiryl has fallen under a dangerous fever and is bedridden in [[Mintos]]. Alena and a band of three mercenaries set out to the reported location of the [[Feverfew root]] to try & recover some to cure Kiryl, but fails. However, the [[Hero (Dragon Quest IV)|Hero of Dragon Quest IV)]] succeeds, and upon learning of their destiny the three immediately join the party for the remainder of the game. Some time later, they return to Zamoksva, finding the cause of its troubles to be the demon [[Balzack|Baalzack]], whom they kill in retribution and for the greater good.

==In Battle==
Kiryl corresponds to the [[priest]] vocation. He learns strong healing and defensive spells, but is fairly limited in the weapons and armor he can equip.

Cristo mostly learns healing and support spells, but he also learns a few spells which can instantly slay one or multiple enemies. He can also equip some of the most powerful weapons and armor in the game including the [[Liquid metal sword]] and [[Liquid metal armour]].

'''Borya''' is a character in ''[[Dragon Quest IV]]''. He is a retainer to [[Alena|Princess Alena]], and follows her when she sets out on her journey to try and ensure her safety.

==Appearance and Personality==
Borya is extremely old and wizened, hinting to his long history of the study of magic. He carries a staff everywhere, topped with a jewel that he presumably uses in some way for spellcasting, though it may be a mundane walking stick.

He is very loyal to Princess Alena, as evidenced by how he immediately rushes after her when she escapes.

==Story==
Chapter 2 begins with Alena begging her father, the King of [[Zamoksva|Saintohaim]], to let her explore the world, since strong fighters are needed more and more in their troubled times, with the Underworld creeping out of dormancy. However, he refuses, saying that with monsters showing increasing aggression, it's simply too dangerous to let her leave the safety of the castle. Alena goes back to her room but, within a few minutes, has been overcome with frustration and escapes the castle.
[[Kiryl]] and Borya, her retainers, give chase; they're resigned to not being able to make her stay put, but if she's going to leave, they can't allow her to travel alone.
After journeying straight to the far ends of Saintohaim, the nomadic [[Desert Bazaar]], she gets a summons from her father, who, upon receiving her, admits that he was mistaken in his overprotectiveness, and opens the Travel Gate to a nearby country. Here, Alena finds the local princess bemoaning her fate, because her father has promised her hand to the winner of the Endor Tournament, an annual fighting competition, and her father seriously regretting this promise. Though she hears rumblings of an extremely dangerous entrant named Psaro, Alena enters and gets to the finals, only to find that her opponent, who would have been Psaro, has disappeared. By winning the tournament, Alena absolve the Princess of her duty.

However, even as she is celebrating her victory a Santohaim soldier rushes in and cries that she must return to the castle at once, then dies at the scene. The party returns to the Castle but finds it completely devoid of life. They set out to investigate and the chapter ends abruptly.

Alena and her companions are not seen again until Chapter 5, when Kiryl has fallen under a dangerous fever while in [[Mintos]] (from which they traveled to from [[Prothtrunnel]]). Alena and a band of three mercenaries set out to the [[Feverfew root]]'s reported [[Imperial Pantry of Parthenia|location]] to try and recover some to cure Kiryl, but fails. However, [[Hero (Dragon Quest IV)|The Hero]] succeeds, and upon learning of their destiny the three immediately join the party for the remainder of the game. Some time later, they return to Santohaim, finding the cause of its troubles to be the demon [[Balzack|Baalzack]], whom they kill in retribution and for the greater good.

==In Battle==
In the ''[[Dragon Quest III|Dragon Quest IV]]'' class system, Borya is a [[wizard]]. He has high MP and Intelligence, but low physical attributes. Borya is one of the more popular characters in the game due to the powerful positive [[status effect]]s he can infer on the party and ice based spells. However, the weapons and armour he can equip are quite limited.

==Name translation==
In the original [[Nintendo Entertainment System|NES]] version of ''Dragon Quest IV'', Borya was known as Brey. It is notable that this name translation stays truer to the original Japanese ''Dragon Quest IV''. [[Plus Alpha]]'s more recent translation of the game for the Nintendo DS took many more liberties with the original translation, adding things such as regional accents and other small changes. Thus the name 'Borya' is not quite the same name as in the original Japanese version of the game.

==Remake==
In the NES version of the game, recruiting Borya can be delayed until Kiryl is cured. The [[Sony PlayStation]] and [[Nintendo DS]] version has a [[Thief's Key]] door placed in the [[Imperial Pantry of Parthenia]], which Alena & her allies will only show up to open if Borya is recruited in The Hero's party.

'''Ragnar McRyan''' (first localized as '''Ragnar''' in ''[[Dragon Warrior IV]]'') is a character in ''[[Dragon Quest IV]]''; the first character that the player controls (second in the [[Sony PlayStation]] and [[Nintendo DS]] Version as the prologue lets you play as [[Hero (Dragon Quest IV)|The Hero]]). A soldier of the Kingdom of [[Burland]], Ragnar is sent to investigate a case of missing children in the village of [[Strathbaile]].

Discounting the prologue, and the fact that all main characters are in Chapter Six, Ragnar is the only chosen character appearing in multiple chapters (with the exception being Chapter Four).

==Appearance and Personality==
Ragnar dresses in the typical reddish plate armour of a [[Soldier]]. Naturally, he is far more concerned with improving his skill at arms than with scholarly pursuits. He is quite compassionate, as evidenced by his righteous fury against the demonic kidnappers. Ragnar's fellow soldiers look up to him with admiration and respect, and even the king places the utmost confidence in him.

In the DS remake, Ragnar speaks with a Scottish accent (ex: "Och no! Hoo'd I manage tae get scrabbed right on the end o' ma couter?").

==Story==
Ragnar's chapter begins with him receiving a summons from the King of Burland. He treks through a cave from his hometown in the south to the royal castle; to do so, he is forced to travel through a cave, where he meets [[Healie]], a [[Healslime]] who joins him on his quest after being rejected by several of Ragnar's comrades.

After reaching the castle, the king tasks Ragnar with discovering the cause of the sudden disappearance of many of Strathbaile's children. Ragnar tracks down the kids' usual hangout spot, and from here Healie discovers a magical "spring" to a nearby fortress, which several Burland soldiers have already located and are fast on their way to perishing in, if they have not already done so. Ragnar makes it to the heart of the fortress, and confronts the demon responsible, who unveils the Underworld's master plan of killing the Chosen before he can ever rise against their Lord. Ragnar kills him and rescues the children, winning the favour of the entire country.

Despite the accolades he receives, knowing the Underworld's plan Ragnar reveals he cannot simply stand by as darkness gathers, and sets out on a quest with Healie, to find and protect the hero.

Ragnar makes cameo appearances during Chapters 2 and 3. In Chapter 2 he is in the [[Zamoksva/Endor Teleportal|Endor Shrine]] at night. In Chapter 3 he can be found in the [[casino]] at Endor in which he is looking for The Hero.

By Chapter 5, his search took him to [[Mintos]] where a couple of residents would relate his visit to The Hero.

Sometime after, Ragnar headed to the [[House of Prophecy]] to learn more about The Hero, but diverted from that search when learning about the corrupt King of [[Palais de Léon]] from a prisoner at [[Havre Léon]].

He arrived to the castle where he is about to take on the [[Marquis de Léon|Marquis]]. After the Marquis is defeated by the [[Hero (Dragon Quest IV)|Hero's]] party, Ragnar joins forces with the hero.

After the downfall of [[Psaro the Manslayer]] ([[Aamon]] in the remakes), Ragnar reported the victory to The King of Burland and later visited The Hero in [[Hidden Valley]] with the rest of the party.

==Abilities==
When applied to the ''[[Dragon Quest III]]'' class system, Ragnar is a [[soldier]]. He has strong attack and defense, but low agility, can wear most armor and wield most weapons, but has no spells. Even his character design is a variation of the soldier, though his main color is pink, not red.

==Names==
* His original name is ライアン. This was romanized Lyan in the original guidebook, but Ryan on the official DS wallpaper.
* In the German DS localization he is called Ragnar Rauhbein. Rauhbein is a German term for a person that is uncouth, but good at heart.
* In the Italian DS localisation, he is called Galiardo de Guglielmi.

==Other Appearances==

===''[[Dragon Quest VIII]]''===
Ragnar appears as one of the monster team owners at [[Morrie]]'s [[Monster Arena]]. His team includes a [[Healslime]], a [[Dullahan]], and a [[Gigantes]], which are called "Healie's Heelies," a likely homage to his short partnership with one.

==Non-''Dragon Quest'' Appearances==

===''[[Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy in Itadaki Street Special]]''===
Along with Torneko, Kiryl, and Alena, Ragnar appears as a playable character in ''Itadaki Street Special''.
{{Translation|'''Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen'''|導かれし者たち|Doragon Kuesuto Fō Michibikareshi Monotachi|literally meaning; ''The People Who Are Shown the Way''}} is a role-playing game and the fourth instalment of the ''[[Dragon Quest (series)|Dragon Quest]]'' video game series. The game was originally released for the [[Nintendo Entertainment System|NES]] but was remade for the [[PlayStation]] and later [[Nintendo DS]]. It begins the ''Tenkuujyou'' (''Celestial Castle'') trilogy.

It was originally released for the [[Nintendo Entertainment System|Famicom]] on February 11, 1990 in Japan. The North American version, titled ''Dragon Warrior IV'', was released for the NES in October 1992.

==Gameplay==
''Dragon Quest IV'' had a unique way of advancing the story. It was split into five chapters. The first four chapters were told from the perspective of the hero's future companions. The fifth chapter was the hero's quest. During that quest, you would meet with and join with the companions whose stories were told in earlier chapters. Then, with a full cast of companions the group would begin their journey to save the world.

The story line of Dragon Quest IV does not relate to the events of Dragon Quest I, II, and III.

''Dragon Quest IV'' introduced several new features over the first three titles; namely the new chapter-based structure of the game's plot. Also the inclusion of the, now common, casino. In addition, there were party member [[artificial intelligence]] options, which allowed players to give strategies to their party while still directly controlling the hero character. Finally, the wagon which allowed extra characters to wait and be exchanged during battle if needed.

In the fifth chapter of the NES version of the game, the player no longer directly controls any of the previous characters; instead using the Tactics menu to deliver a loose set of instructions (Normal, Defensive, Offensive, Save MP, Use No MP, Try Out). The only character directly controlled is the Hero. All chapters except chapter 2 also contain Non-Player Characters, which travel with the player, but cannot be directly controlled. They act on their own, guided by the game's AI.

==Plot==
[[File:DQIVPSArt.png|right|thumb|310px|PlayStation art]]
The first four chapters of the story are about the hero's companions and their own journeys. While they each travel with their own goals and dreams in mind, they all eventually find out about [[Psaro]] and his plot to kill the hero and revive [[Estark]], leading them all to join forces so they can put a stop to [[Psaro]] and his plans.

Chapter 6 is a post-epilouge continuation of the game's storyline. Originally appearing in the PlayStation remake of Dragon Quest IV (and the subsequent DS port), Chapter 6 offers a lengthy bonus dungeon, and the culmination of certain plot points that were left ambiguous in the original release.
===Remakes===
''Dragon Quest IV'' was remade for the [[PlayStation]] on November 22, 2001 in Japan. It was developed by Heartbeat and published by Enix. The remake was developed using the [[Dragon Quest VII]]'s 3D graphics engine, but was still ''Dragon Quest IV''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s story and world. With this remake came new features; among them were a new chapter, a new character, a boom town reminiscent of VII's, an inter-party talk command similar to ''Dragon Quest VII'', and the ability to turn off the artificial intelligence for party members. The Enix of America Corporation originally planned to bring the remake to North America in 2002, but it was later cancelled due to Heartbeat closing its video game development operations.

On November 22, 2007, this Playstation remake was ported to the Nintendo DS. No significant changes were made to the game's story, gameplay, or bonus features, aside from modifying the boom town's immigration aspects to reflect the lack of memory cards in the DS hardware. This portable version was released internationally in September of 2008, though without the party chart present in the Japanese release.

===Sequels===
''Dragon Quest IV'' is the fourth game in the ''[[Dragon Quest]]'' series. The next game in the series is ''[[Dragon Quest V]]'', which has some references to ''Dragon Quest IV'', but is mostly an independent story.

==Version Differences==
===PlayStation and DS===
*Both the [[Playstation]] and [[Nintendo DS]] versions have a [[Prologue]] chapter to introduce the [[Hero (Dragon Warrior IV)|hero]] before chapter one begins, as well as a 6th chapter with a bonus dungeon and alternate ending. There is also a new Tactics feature to manually control your party in chapter 5. The Playstation version uses the graphics engine from [[Dragon Warrior VII]] and the [[Nintendo DS]] remake uses nearly the same style.
*A new dungeon was added in the "after-game," along with a new Zoom Point. Completing this dungeon a certain number of times grants access to get Psaro's equipment and causes Psaro, a naked and gender-confused man, to appear in the Immigrant Town.
*An [[Immigrant Town]] was added, similar to [[Sim's Town]] in [[Dragon Quest VII]]. It is located in place of the [[Desert Bazaar]] (which in the NES version served no purpose in Chapter 5). It is ran by [[Hank Hoffman Jr.]] (who remains in the in at [[Mintos]] in the NES Version).
*In the NES Version, Hank leaves the party after [[Alena]] and her companions join. In the Playstation and DS Version, he leaves immediately upon entering Mintos.
*The first floor of the [[Imperial Pantry of Parthenia]] has a [[Thief's Key]] door blocking off the rest of the cave. To get it opened, [[Borya]] has to be recruited, which triggers a scene where Alena kicks the door down despite having the key. The Nintendo version of the cave lacks the door and can be completed without recruiting Borya.
*While still uncontrollable during combat, Healing Spells known by [[Healie]], [[Laurel]] and [[Orifiela]] can be used manually out of battle.
*The PS and DS Version include The [[Bag]] for unlimited item storage.
*In the PS and DS Version, only [[Eliza]] and [[Float-o-copier]]s can use the [[Morph]] Spell, whereas in the NES Version, the Hero could also learn it.
*In the Nintendo Version, [[Marquis de Léon]] dies after his defeat, whereas in the remakes, he reverts to his human form and forgets his time as a monster.
*In the remakes, the player is no longer loses [[Gold]] Coins after being defeated by Marquis de Léon in Chapter 4.
*Both of the remakes have the [[Lightning staff]] available much sooner in the [[Vault of Vrenor]] as opposed to later in [[Castle Nadiria]].
*[[Boomerang]]s were replaced by [[Hunter's Bow]].
*[[Thorn Whip]]s were replaced by [[Divine Dagger]]s.
*Instead of the [[Liquid metal shield]], the [[casino]] sells [[falcon sword]]s.
*[[Liquid metal armour]] now costs 35,000 Gold Coins as opposed to the 15,000 in the NES Version.
