Dread dragon

From Dragon Quest Wiki
(Redirected from Red dragon (Quadruped))
Jump to navigation Jump to search
For its bipedal counterpart first seen in IV, see Red dragon.

The Dread dragon is a monster in the series.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Dread dragons are immense quadrupedal and wingless dragons that are covered in red scales and have a light yellow underbelly. In its original appearance, the dread dragon had blue scales running down its back and tail and blue frills on the side of its head, but in later appearance, the frills and scales changed to a shade of dark pink instead. It is able to breathe out powerful fire breath, second only to the Dragonlord himself, and occasionally is able to cast some simple spells. They are said to be from a legendary line of dragons, with even the Dragonlord recognising their power. According to its monster description in X, dread dragons lay a clutch of up to twelve eggs, though the fastest growing hatchlings have a habit of killing the rest of their siblings.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • In the original Dragon Quest, the dread dragon was originally planned to be called Dark dragon (ダークドラゴン,, Dākudoragon?). However, due to the limited memory of the Famicom, not all Japanese kana could be used, including the katakana (ク, ku), so the monster was named Darth dragon (ダースドラゴン,, Dāsudoragon?) instead. This peculiar naming is referenced to in Dragon Quest X, where its monster description states that dread dragons lay a clutch of a dozen eggs, but the first to hatch kills the rest of its siblings.[1]
